US Dumping Genetically Engineered Corn in Mexico
US Dumping Genetically Engineered Corn in Mexico
A Flood of US Corn Rips at Mexico From the second link: One of the ballyhooed successes of the North American Free Trade Agreement has been the opening of Mexico to American farmers, who are now selling millions of bushels of corn south of the border. But why would Mexico, whose people still subsist on maize (mostly in tortillas), whose farmers still grow more maize than any other crop, ever buy corn from an American farmer? Because he can produce it much more cheaply than any Mexican farmer can. Actually that's not quite right. It's because he can sell it much more cheaply. This is largely because of U.S. agricultural policies. While one part of the U.S. government speaks of the need to alleviate Third World poverty, another is writing subsidy checks to American farmers, which encourages them to undersell Third World farmers.

Sounds like a future lawsuit by Monsanto for not paying the "Technology Fee" which they charge farmers when their GM genes invade the farmers crop.

What's the problem? They want the corn to make money so they buy what they can to maximize production. PRetty words but it is just a "buy a farmer" vote which explains the check. People want to have a govt to take care of them from cradle to grave so the govt meddles in all affairs and makes a bigger mess on the whole.

Hint, the weather permits 4 crop cycles per year . . . and there's a agricultural workforce that had years of experience in sugar cane and pineapple . . .

The thing with corn in Mexico is just whack. Our business interests have no problem making money in Mexico, even when it doesn't make much sense and puts Mexican farmers out of work. Lowest price isn't everything. Mexicans lose more than they gain from the slightly lower price of our corn.

I hate to be the one to break the news but ALL corn is genetically engineered.
Just like everything else it's engineered to produce bigger, better and more. In fact we only grow one kind of corn anymore compared to dozens of variations only a few years ago. Question; what do you think is going to happen when a bug or disease comes around that favors the one variation of corn that's being grown? Ever wonder why so much pesticide is used? Danny
