The Longest Day . .

Hey, I just realized that today is the longest day of the year. Summer Solstice. It also feels like tha hottest day of the year, but I'm sure there will be hotter ones than this.

Me too. Back on June 6th, I asked a number of people if they knew the significance of the date (as I do every year). No one under age 50 knew w/o being reminded, even when given the full date, with the year 1944 specified.

Wow that is bad. Why are so many people in this country so bad at both history and geography?

Don't feel so bad..
Back in my college days, (after I got out of the service), I was in a class and the teacher asked if anyone knew what day it was. The teacher was Al Severance, who was also the former head basketball. A good coach and a well respected man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Severance

Al had the well earned nickname of "Screamin Al" So in his gruff voice, he asks the class:
"Does anyone know what day it is today? And don't tell me 'Its Tuesday!'"
It happened to be November 11, 1969.
No one knew.
I remember it like it was yesterday.

Here's my favorite scene from The Longest Day.

I have to admit, I had to think about it for a moment, but I remembered the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month...

Leave it up to Robert Mitchum: "During the filming of the landings at Omaha Beach, the American soldiers appearing as extras didn't want to jump off the landing craft into the water because they thought it would be too cold. Robert Mitchum, who played General Norm Cota, finally got disgusted with them and jumped in first, at which point the soldiers had no choice but to follow his example."

An old Hollywood guy told me years ago that the technical advisors on this film were from both sides. They were put up at some very nice resort and told to just try and remember things.

It was sort of uneasy at first, but then everybody became used to the fact that it was War and nothing was personal about it. Then they all had a great time for several weeks and 20th Century-Fox picked up all their bills.

By the way, the scene where the guy takes the bridge and keeps hearing 'Hold until relived, hold until relived...' The actor that played that part was also the tech advisor on that secne since he was also the same guy that took the bridge that night.

A lot of the guys played them self according to IMDB they used 23.000 extras, that's a military operation on it self.

Sorry for hijacking the tread but I love movies more than the solstice and now is it down hill anyways

A friend of mine who was there just died. He was 94 and still had nightmares about it.
