The pressure from water at a depth of 1 mile is 2400 psi. The oil is at a greater pressure if flowing out of the pipe.
An oilman on Chris Matthew's show used the figure 30,000 psi, on closed captioning. Numbers are sometimes miscaptioned, so he may actually have said 3,000 psi.

Yes it is. But I doubt aluminum is the material of choice for oil well casing.
With all the testing being done, it appears to me the casing is close to its structural limit. If the casing ruptures it will be just about impossible to cap the well.

Well, yup

Just pointing out the tenacity of a quantity that large. Time will tell

I heard the well pressure was 18,000 psi, but I wasn't paying close attention.

OK, all goes well and this cap works, pressure checks etc etc.

They still plan to use a relief well to seal it ???

Why not hook up a pipe and take advantage of it ??

Other than the stigma of that well.
Maybe superstition (?) ???

No, the art of drilling at those depths is pretty much established. Dealing with blowouts is the X factor.
