Technology Extinction Looms

According to Samantha Murphy at LiveScience.com

1) Fax Machines

2) Landline Phones

3) Beeper/Pagers

4) DVD players

5) Film Projectors at theatres

6) The Computer Mouse

7) Cell Phone Chargers

8) Plasma TVs

9) Credit Cards

10) E-Book Readers

11) iPods

Except for the pager and film project, I still have (and use) all of these!

I think it depends on what kind of turntable. I have a Von Fahnestock turntable that you operate with a crank on the side

I can play my recording of William Jennings Bryan (see wiki) and Amos N Andy. Plus the Charleston records, if I don't play them too loudly..

I tend to agree with the looming extinction of iPods and the mouse. Since nearly all mobile phones can do music and many can do video . . . a dedicated media player may be as redundant as cheap digital cameras are now.

The computer mouse might be done in by the very company that pioneered its use in personal computing, Apple. The multitouch pad, including the newest Magic Trackpad accessory, combined with operating systems that are touch based, might be the future.

Okay Strelnik at least my turntable doesn't have to be cranked. Also now that i have read the article i see that she was referring Only to the iPod which with the iPad and other new apple stuff could die, however i do not think that dedicated media devices will die because of a smart phones ability to play music and videos because of capacity, playback quality and battery life.

A song in FLAC format playing through some good headphones like my Grados will drain the battery quicker than the same song in mp3 format through those pos buds that came with your iPod. Yes i realize that i am the minority in both headphone choice and format choice but I and others like me want the music to sound as good as possible and i just cant see a smart phone having the same quality, not because the tech is not available but because the music would be a "secondary" function.
I leave you at that and now i have to go flip The Ink Spots.

I hardly use any of these things.
I gave up my land line years ago and with it the FAX machine.
I have not carried a beeper since 2004 when we got our first crackberries.

Somethings never die though - I was also listening to vinyl all day - Mine are more like CSNY, John Lennon, and George Harrison although I have a large 78 rpm collection that I can no longer listen to.

Can't seem to shake the DVD player, all the online movie guys only give you crap online, otherwise they want to mail you a DVD. Why?

I don't get iPod extinction. The things are everywhere.

When you really consider it, most of the endangered technologies are being done in by mobile phones that consolidated/converged other technologies. Personal computing is getting a lot more personal.

Film projectors with film yes but you're still going to need some sort of projector regardless of where the image is coming from.

Credit cards also aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I was always surprised that the E-Readers existed in the first place as opposed to them being a software program on a normal computer (The iPad will probably be the end of them.....)

Cell phone chargers? How the heck are you supposed to even have a cell phone if you can't charge it? Magical batteries?

I personally love mice and cannot stand touch pads.

I thought I was uber cutting edge with my wireless laser mouse!

The problem with streaming media is that they quality isn't that good. Although I suspect in a few years that won't be the case. Already some video players are starting to go 1080, but its not common yet.

Half the stuff on my Smartphone doesn't work anyhow. I'm tired of seeing them try to make one object do everything imaginable. Of course, I grew up in an era when your phone only allowed you to talk to people on other phones. You couldn't wander too far while talking either.

Of course, it didn't require you to read a 200 page manual in order to operate it either . . . It worked real well, though.

1) Fax Machines - Almost gone now, I use mine rarely.

2) Landline Phones - Also almost gone, I mostly have a landline for the occasional fax.

3) Beeper/Pagers - Haven't seen one in 5 years.

4) DVD players - Almost dead, I have everything transferred to hard drives.

5) Film Projectors at theaters - I'm sure they will all be digital projectors soon.

6) The Computer Mouse - I hope so, touch pads are much easier to use.

7) Cell Phone Chargers - Who still has a cell phone that doesn't sync to their computer?

8) Plasma TVs - I prefer my plasma TV, hopefully there will be something as good when I need to replace it.

9) Credit Cards - Probably will be replaced by some type of proximity fob soon.

10) E-Book Readers - I haven't touched one since I got an iPad, single use devices don't have much future.

11) iPods - Another single use device; I have a bunch of iPods, but I use my iPhone for all my music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.

More than cell phone chargers hopefully 'chargers' period, technically.

Move ALL devices like to a USB type charging system, eliminate the thousands of different bricks plugged in eating a watt or two an hour, not much but !!

I've always hated that each device not only needs a charger, but a unique charger.

Years a go I had a Motorola phone, the wife had a Motorola phone and I had a bluetooth headset (guess yep Motorola), all three had different and non interchangeable chargers.

Think of the waste, manufacturing, shipping, stocking, time and energy managing the inventory, disposal and again the watt or two a day each ate. Not even thinking about the added hassle, weight etc when traveling, ever get to a destination and find out you forgot a charger of course for the most important device.

I believe China has passed a law that will begin to create a common power std for all rechargable devices. I read they were working on it, I don't know if it ever became law.

They need to standardize batteries too, maybe 5 sizes with only different types within (ie alka, li, NiCad ...)
