Study Says Popular Joint Supplements Don't Work

Ineffective, Either Alone or in Combination

Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements have been popular for years among people with arthritic knees or hips. According to the authors of the study, worldwide sales of the supplements reached almost $2 billion in 2008.

I had Knee trouble following a knee cap fracture as a teen. It was on going for about 30 years. The other knee started to give trouble, probably because of the extra load put on it. Since about 1995 I have taken glucosamine & have not had any knee problems. Prior, I used to have at least 1 dislocation each year.
It has worked for me!!
This week, I have been in hospital having a shoulder operation; rotator cuff repair and other work following an injury about 18 months ago. The surgeon had me stop taking it 3 months ago in prep for the shoulder work. My knees have been some what 'wonky' during this time. I am due back on the glucosamine in a couple of months.
If its only a placebo, its a good one !!

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it's effective for many humans - I know it works wonders in dogs. I've seen huge improvements in three of mine over the years, and know pf many others.

My mutts are smart, but suggesting they are capable of a placebo effect is a bit of a stretch...

It has definitely worked for me, although the effects are not immediate. It takes 2 or 3 months or more to work.

How do you know it isn't YOU that is having the placebo effect? Wife told me of many of her patient's loved ones who see signs of them getting better. Too bad the test results don't bear that one out and the death somehow seems to baffle them. They often ask her "WHY?? She/He was getting better. She/He even ........"

Older dog yelps in pain after quick movements after periods of rest, and/or has severe mobility issues a day after rigorous exercise.

Vets diagnose as mild displasia, and/or OA.

Glucosamine supplements administered, 3-6 weeks later symptoms significantly alleviated and/or disappear completely. Yelps of pain no longer present, and a return to daily exercise results in zero mobility issues.

The above is common in the dog world, but feel free to continue sticking your head in the sand and/or suggesting people are suffering from some ridiculous third-party placebo effect. The above improvements are easily observed - wishful thinking doesn't eliminate obvious signs of pain.

Probably mentioned it here before, but for those wishing to give it a shot for dogs with such ailments - glucosamine supplements can be bought in bulk at great prices, while supporting a worthy cause (greyhound rescue) from www.greyhoundgang.com. No affiliation, other than satisfied customer.

And, whether one doubts its efficacy is mostly irrelevant - trying it is cheap, and there are no studies showing any significant side effects in dogs.

I too have gone thru that route. It didn't seem to make a difference. There are some days where he is better, some not so good.

So if I don't simply embrace a product that refuses to prove itself, it is called sticking one's head in the sand even when that product has been proven by science NOT to work?

I doubt the efficacy of any product that is unwilling to prove itself. Would you believe I score higher on a certain test than mensa candidates? I do refuse to prove it too.

Adequan is cheaper because it is a proven product. This is snake oil that has not been proven to work. A very simple question is how much is really reaching the joints, if any at all?

deadlifts & strength training = best medicine out there (so long as you don't overdo it)

Ohhh, I don't know. I always found that a little hash oil dribbled onto the paper before.... Wait. They're talking about something different. Never mind.
