I think a thicker skin is in order. OTOH, if all your jokes are "dumb Chinaman jokes", I might start to take offense. If they are kinda spread out, it is just a joke.
So there is a threshold at which you'd take offense?

That's where common decency comes in. I wouldn't even think about making a "dumb Chinaman" joke; let alone an N-word, homosexual, Jewish, joke. All of which you won't see/hear on network TV or local radio because they were deemed off limits. But "retard" jokes are still fair game in those venues. Obviously cable, satellite radio and private conversations are a different story and yes, there are some who offend everyone.

As a bald, glasses-wearing, overweight, Republican (registered but not exactly), middle-aged, white, pickup driving male I am the butt of many jokes and have a thick enough skin to laugh it off and find the humor. Each one of those groups have the power and voice to speak for and defend themselves if they deem it necessary. Those with intellectual disabilities are often not able to which makes the targeting of them especially cowardly. But just because they aren't able to speak up for themselves doesn't mean they aren't effected in exactly the same way those other groups would be if/when they heard jokes at their expense.

It's such a circuitous argument. Those who see nothing wrong with these jokes probably never will.

There is a threshold, yes. Unlike many, once I take offense, it is permanent. At which point, I won't piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire. At 18 and more horny than now, I gave up a night of sex to watch someone I didn't like suffer and destroy his expensive glasses. 20 plus years later or today, if I saw him gut shot in the woods, I'd still sit and watch him die slowly. Same with my brother who pissed me off when we were kids. So, there is a threshold and once crossed, I will try to harm you when opportunity permits. As such, I want to be absolutely certain that it isn't some accident.

I was wondering who had the bite on the panty line. Besides, I don't voluneteer unless I see a pic of whose panty line needs some TLC.

Pretty much sums up the way I react/feel about a bunch of people around these parts, who dont even know me...but continue to pound thier rascism/bigotry down my throat about the religion I have chosen.
Once or twice hearing it isexpected..but a constant drone gets to be a little much.
Thankfully I have implemented the ignore option, in 2 cases.

Working on something you need to spend 5 minutes sqeezing, crawling twisting into and realize you brought the wrong tool.
Or the battery on the drill going dead after crawling for 10 minutes into a tight corner in my attic.

What tool were you bringing? Wrong attachment for the unit, perhaps?

As well you should. You have the intellectual capacity to determine if someone intends to hurt/harm you and utilize that capacity to defend yourself in whatever manner you see fit. That's not always the case with folks with ID.

It's hard to explain. Anyone can pick on me all they want, I have a very thick skin. Buy pick on my son, and those with similar issues, and it's another story. I just feel like I need to be his voice, something that I have failed at in the past.

I know how much you love your dogs and have been trying to think of a similar scenario but I'm having a tough time coming up with one.

I hope you'd still consider pissing on my teeth if they were on fire.

Nah, worse than that. Doing the whole squeezing, crawling bit only to realize the tool you brought was somewhere back there in your rear pants pocket.

Not necessary, IMO. You won't change their attitude if their entire repertoire of jokes centers around the "There was this retard.....". Not happening. Just like the "Dumb Pollock", "Dumb Chink", etc, etc.

Try kids throwing sticks at my dogs. Wife got that done to her. Dog got pissed. She and the dogs ran after them and cornered them. I made sure that they were returned to their parents alive, sans a few bits of skin they lost when they fell.

Sure. We aren't enemies.

You know, grab a metric and you need american or vice versa.
Box wrench and u need open end.
Even have the socket holder with all of them, and find out the size you need is missing, ie I have 6 and 12 points in seperate holders, put both 1/2"s in one holder instead of the 1/2 and 7/16s.

Yep that adds insult to injury.
