I doubt you'll find a Ruger MKII worth owning for 2 hundred bucks, in addition, I would never teach a kid that young to shoot on a semi auto. There's too much room for error. I'd get him a small, single action 22 revolver with as long a barrel as you can find and still fit his hand. My son was shooting my old Ruger Single Six when he was 8, and he still loves that pistol. He can drive tacks with it, whereas I might be able to hit a skunk at 25 feet if it's not too dark. His first long gun was a single shot Stevens Favorite .22 and his first shotgun a single shot 410. Knowing you've only got one shot, or at the most have to pause and pull the hammer back again makes a beginning shooter much more thoughtful and a better shot in the long run in my opinion. Unless his little ego needs the machismo of a clip full of bullets of course

The Ruger is now a MKIII. I have a 22/45 which is almost the same thing, but has the same grip angle as a 1911.

Target sights are available. You want them. They are easily and very finely adjustable.

Multiple barrel lengths are available. I would resist the urge to get the longest one (about 7") because of the weight, especially if you get the "bull" barrel model. I'm not sure what dictates whether you have the tapered or "bull" barrel. Might be the target sights.

If you shoot unclad bullets, you will experience misfeeds, as the bullet face impacts the edge of the ramp. Trashes the bullet face. Kind of a pain. Good thing it is only occasional. Clad bullets seem to work better.

The "tacticool" .22's out their these days tend to attract kids attention a lot. GSG makes a nice MP5, 1911, and AK47 clone which are a blast to shoot. The Walther P22 is also a nice little training pistol.

The GSG 1911 is my next purchase, I can't afford to keep feeding my 1911 .45ACP, but .22LR is still dirt cheap.

Another "gun thread" ... and the OP explodes over an actually well placed joke. Now that is funny. Only on Peachparts OD.

.22lr is a very unreliable caliber to begin with. Being cheap only makes it worse. $200 or less for a pistol or revolver in this caliber won't prolly do much to improve it either.

The quality of your ammo will make the biggest difference. Even with decent bulk ammo a pistol like the Beretta 21a will have frequent cycle issues.
A Ruger MKII is a fine handgun in .22lr. So is the Browning Buckmark. A S&W 617 revolver is cherry a Ruger single six a very good choice.

It usually pays to go for quality in guns, which ofcourse costs more.

I don't mind a good joke, believe me. I am just tired of people cruising on here and feeling the need to post just because. He had no valid reason (opinion or factual information) to contribute to the thread other than to bust my balls. I apologize if I seem prude or if I have offended.

How do you think .22 is very unreliable? Out of the last 100 rounds of .22 ammo I have shot (through several guns) I have not had one misfire.

So, you are saying that the Beretta 21a I can pick up for just over $200 not a decent gun?

If you don't HAVE to have a semi, let me know. I have an H&R 929 with a six inch barrel for sale.

Unclad bullets are fine in a revolver.

Unclad bullets are fine in most semis too. There are a lot of rounds that you can use that are semi-jacketed and they have way better expansion than solid bullets.

A Walther P22 is small and cool looking, and looks to be a lot of fun, BUT I don't know if you can find one for under $200, even used, unless you fall into a deal.

The P22 seems to have a mixed reputation, with some loving it and some hating it. My wife and I rented one a few years back that had a few 'issues' with failure to cycle, but being a 'range gun' it may just have needed a good cleaning and lube...

Not sure if the P22 has the issue of biting the hand like the PPK.

I have mixed feelings on the P22, I find the trigger and overall feel to be a bit plastic. Overall its not a bad piece. My friend has the longer barrel target version and its pretty accurate.

I would suggest starting the kid off with a bb gun to avoid him injuring himself or others.
After all you don't really expect him to use it for personal protection do you?
You can get him a .22 when he's a little older.
