If you don't HAVE to have a semi, let me know. I have an H&R 929 with a six inch barrel for sale.

Unclad bullets are fine in a revolver.

Unclad bullets are fine in most semis too. There are a lot of rounds that you can use that are semi-jacketed and they have way better expansion than solid bullets.

A Walther P22 is small and cool looking, and looks to be a lot of fun, BUT I don't know if you can find one for under $200, even used, unless you fall into a deal.

The P22 seems to have a mixed reputation, with some loving it and some hating it. My wife and I rented one a few years back that had a few 'issues' with failure to cycle, but being a 'range gun' it may just have needed a good cleaning and lube...

Not sure if the P22 has the issue of biting the hand like the PPK.

I think the problem of the slide raking the web of the hand is more prevalent if the shooter has big or beefy hands. A seven-year-old kid should be ok.

I have mixed feelings on the P22, I find the trigger and overall feel to be a bit plastic. Overall its not a bad piece. My friend has the longer barrel target version and its pretty accurate.

I would suggest starting the kid off with a bb gun to avoid him injuring himself or others.
After all you don't really expect him to use it for personal protection do you?
You can get him a .22 when he's a little older.

Uh, a little too late for that. He has shot everything from my .50 cal Thompson Center Muzzleloader to his own Savage .22 Rifle to my Dad's Raven Arms .25 Auto. The last gun he shot was my AMT Backup in .45 Auto. He has handled each weapon well, however, I do admit the .45 was a bit too much for him and he won't be shooting it anytime soon.

Why would I even bring up him using it for personal protection? I am looking for an inexpensive gun for us to have fun with at the range. He knows and follows all rules and is under constant adult supervision when shooting.

But he'll put out his eye with a BB gun.

For a newbie, it might be ok till he decides what he wants to shoot.

Yeah its all relative to, I'm totally spoiled with my 1911's trigger. The only pistol that has a better trigger is my friends HK MK23. I'd need to spend $2,500 on a Wilson Combat to edge out the HK trigger wise.

Sig as of late has really good triggers, my friend just bought a P239 and its quite smooth and crisp. The P22 OTOH has an airsoft trigger which most .22's suffer from.

get him something that will fit well in his lunch pail or book sack. schools are getting tough these days...

seriously, I think what you are doing is great. My dad did the same for my brothers and I and none of us ever had a firearms based incident or accident. Healthy respect is what this teaches, together with strengthening the family bonds. rock on....................
