I'm wondering, for you folks that do WANT to give to these folks, what would be wrong with giving them a $5 Walmart* or MickeyD gift card?

You have the satisfaction of knowing you're not, hopefully, contributing to their bad habits by feeding them cash. If they sell the GC? I'm not around to witness it then...so much the better. Besides, to do that, they'd have to expend some energy...that may be a stretch for a few of them if that's the case.

Just a thought...

How about this. I keep my money, have the satisfaction of KNOWING that I am contributing towards the making them an example of what NOT to be?

On the way back, the GF decided to stop in a shoe store directly across from the beggar. So, rather than listen to him incessantly badger me for money, I figure that $1.00 ought to satisfy him and I can wait in peace.

Walk up............pull out $1.00.............and he comments that he doesn't want the dollar...........he wants me to go across the street and buy him a sandwich.

You can't make this stuff up.
My BiL says he buys an extra sandwich and gives one to the panhandler in lieu of cash, which would of course be used for drugs. This guy was looking for one such character.

Unbelievalbe cheek though.

Reminds me in around '97 I gave a quarter to a guy who used to hang out near a drugstore in a toney part of SF (presidio heights) holding on to a squeegie, bascially bumming donations. He said 'WTF am I going to do with a quarter?' I said, 'buy part of a sandwich with it.' Dude continued fuming. F the bastid. If every 5th person gave him a quarter, he'd be making $10 an hour just on that. But no, he wants some well healed guilt ridden person to pay him $5 for $2 worth of work, cleaning a windshield.

Precisely........

I now ask them if they need me to call 911 on 'em - if they really need "help......"

New angle on the street beggar. Three Sundays ago I motion the guy over to the Mercedes-Benz at the light, he's getting ready to take some money from me when I give him a sales pitch to buy product from me. It stunned him unconscious. The 'deer-in-the-headlights' look from the guy was priceless! No sale for either of us. I'm laughing hard as I make the turn.

Cool

Unbelieveably, there's a "panhandler" standing on the traffic island a few weeks ago when the temperature was BARELY breaking 0°F... So, I thought to myself, "Self? Why don't you pull out your Cannon and get a shot of this? He's standing near a light pole w/his "Homeless. Anything will help." placard."

So I reach down, pull out the Cannon and turn it on...the lens extends and since I'm about 4 cars back from him (waiting to make a left turn at the light) I needed to "zoom in" and focus.

Well, Mr. Homeless sees my camera perched on the steering wheel for stability and he folds his placard/sign in half and quickly tucks it in his jacket and turns his face AWAY from me.

The next few weeks, he's gone from the corner...AAMOF, no one is using the corner.

Now, I have to admit, it's not been the best of weather this past week, but on Wednesday, he showed up again...same spot and same sign. I quickly whipped out the camera, but I think he spoted me right way...he folded and ducked again.

And again, Thursday and yesterday, he wasn't around. Even his bucket he was using for sitting on is gone.

I really doubt he's homeless...more like "America's Most Wanted" is more the likely situation.

I wonder if the local cops even bother checking these clowns out? I'd like to see an IRS Agent do a "spot audit" on these stinkers.

Yah! I know! "Where's your 'Donate a MickeyD's Card' attitude?"

Well, after that repeated display... I think he can probably afford alot more than me with his tax-free stipends from the traveling public.

Nope. The real "dicks" are the posers standing on the corner, pan-handling w/signs and raking in $100-$150 a day, tax-free.

If they were SAG members and paying dues, they'd still be "dicks" 'cause the real homeless don't go 5 miles from their own shelter in our area unless they are ACTUALLY APPLYING FOR A JOB. Otherwise, they hang out, downtown, panhandling that area. Most people know them, almost on a first name basis.

Those "dicks" that are posing as "homeless" have some pretty decent shoes on their feet and there are other tell-tail signs (and smells) that also help in determining if you're dealing with someone that's really down on their luck or they're making a buck off the backs of those they're trying to pretend to be.

That's why I asked why doesn't (or if) the local LEOs bother to check these clowns out and see if they're not, in reality, some escapee from some Bat-bin or other cloistered facility.

And if not, why don't the local IRS Agents pull them over for an impromptu curb-side audit?

Inquiring minds keep threads like this going...trolls come on and call names.

Absolutely! He is a little troll.

I believe that getting any suspicious, harrassing scum off the streets would be very healthy for society at large. I aim to do what I can to help them along.

Asking the street-harrasser for a donation while you are taking their picture for Law Enforcement is classic!

As well as calling "911" on 'em when you feel threatened by them is the best solution I've heard of! After all, they need "HELP," do they not!!??
