So now it looks like we will run on the 17th at Columbus In and then on the 30th and 31st at Grissom.

I am working on the livery of the car now.....removed all the stickers and such except the number of the car and class and am working on applying some sort of stripe package or painted two tone scheme.

Looks like they have cancelled the 17th.

Today I removed the bought stripe package and tossed it. It is too difficult for me to install with all the various curves in and out on the race car. I have laid out a two tone/stripe pattern, taped it off sanded and have the nose painted mostly signal orange. tomorrow I hope to finish off the rest. When I get it done I will post pics.

So last two days I have been having paint troubles. When I paint my new paint over the old paint it wrinkles up instantly.

The new and old paint was bought from the same auto paint supplier but the cans are painted differently.

I am wondering if they have changed the type of paint on me.

Yes, this is common when they switch up the typ of paint .

BT, TD, I gave up trying to paint vehicles in the 1970's, it's so dang time consuming and won't allow errors....

So today i took the paint cans over to the store and told them what was happening. First the guy told me that the paint won't work without a catalyzer which you need a paint gun to spray. I asked him why they sold me spray cans specially mixed in my color if it would not work....finally he said I had to spray a couple of dry coats on, wait a half hour then paint a couple more.

So I tried that and lit did a little better but still crinkled in places. Tomorrow I don't know what I will do. I have over $100 in paint and cannot seem to get it to work.

Just curious, did that paint store try to sell you $100.00 with of stuff to remove the stuff they sold you that is no good? Painted a few bombs in the eighties, Then there were lacquer and enamel systems, one could not be overpainted with the other or you get the same effect you are getting. One you need to sand and buff to remove the "orange peel" or zero gloss. Those were 20'er paint jobs at best. That was actually before the term 20'er paint job was coined.

Maybe. I probably would not have heard the hint unless spelled out. I've decided to paint with the old "safety orange" which is more yellow than I want but will still look fine. Of course I'll still have six cans of the new stuff.

Ho, that's rich ~ I remember this from the early 1960's and I bet it went back to the advent of spray painting .

I tried my hand at auto painting in the 1970's and wasn't any good at it, I think my re sprays were more like 10 footers...

.

Is there some sort of sealer I can spray over the old paint then apply the new?

You were better than I was, mine were 20'ers. Painted in the alley behind the house and took all precautions to get a good job. I not only hosed the alley down, I left the hose running and put up pylons to reduce traffic.

The wrinkling indicates you're either trying to lay the wrong typ of paint over the old stuff or they didn't give you the correct activator to add .

In my day there was lacquer and acrylic enamel, laying the enamel over old lacquer without the proper prep caused the wrinkling .

IIRC you mentioned the paint seller didn't even tell you you needed hardener so they're suspect .

Paints have changed, they used to be high in V.O.C. compounds, not so anymore s

Well, they have sold me paint mixed to a specific color and they have put it in aerosol cans for me. He talks of hardener but there is no way to add it to an aerosol can. So now he sold me some sealer/primer which he says to install then wait 30 minutes and spray the paint.

We'll see.
