Is this what you guys are concerned about?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZfbTlYpKYo

How many times when a terrorist has a go at a plane do the authorities say after the event "he has been on our watch list for the past 3 months" ~ if they are on the watch list they should get a full search every time they set foot in an airport. No ifs or buts. just do it!! Not when they go to get on a plane, when they first set foot in the building.
Ban burkas from airports as well. If they want to be in one, they make other arrangements.

One problem with profiling is that it can lead to abuse. Screening criteria can have a veneer of scientific objectivity, but still have the purpose and/or effect of singling out disfavored minorities. This is the same reason the Supreme Court came up with rules governing when, how, and where the police can set up sobriety check points. Without those rules, there is nothing to prevent the police from setting up their check points on the road leading to the neighborhood where all the black people live, for example. Maybe profiling is effective, I don't know, but can it be used in a way that guards against such abuse?

Personally, I'm equally worried about home-grown and middle-eastern crackpots (i.e., very little). I am worried about any government that would consider throwing it's basic principles out the window every time it's population gets a little nervous. How about we all grow up and accept the fact that the government cannot protect us against every risk, real or imaginary.

I agree that the current security measures are unlikely to stop a dedicated terrorist of any type, and that their biggest accomplishment is making some people feel better about flying. Profiling passengers would simply make a "different" group of people feel better about flying (those are not people I would care to share an aircraft with).

The 9/11 attack killed about 2780 people or so. In that same year over 3,000 kids under the age of 15 were killed in gun accidents, 16,000 died and about 1 million were injured in drunk driving accidents, about 30,000 died and over 2.5 million were injured in other driving related accidents, about 100,000 died from diseases contacted in hospitals, half a million die each year from heart attacks mostly caused by smoking and obesity, but no one seems to worry about these numbers. If we had an epidemic like SARS or the West Nile virus the government would mobilize the nation to stop it.

If a bomber did bring down a plane how many people would die? Perhaps 200 or maybe even 300. That is not a fly speck compared to other caused of death. With the money we spend of the TSA and Homeland Security we could fund schools to educate our pathetically ignorant students, or clean up hospitals, or fund medical research, etc.

I can't say that I would like to loose a family member to a bomber but I would also hate to loose one to any of the above causes. We are wasting money and minds trying to stop something that percentage wise doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

I would like to hear just one politician stand up and say that there inevitably will be other acts of terror on american soil and that there is very little that the government can do to stop it. So how about we all crawl out from under our beds and get on with our lives. The reality is that the Big Mac you had for lunch is about 1000 times more likely to kill you than some hypothetical terrorist. Grow up people.

If you believe what the former head of Israel security...

- They do not profile. They talk to every single person at least 3 times.... white, arab, Israelie, old young, male or female....

- Their security personal are college educated and speak at least 2 different languages.

- Their security personal go through at least 4 months of intense training and if they screw up once on the job they are no longer working security.

- They are well paid and highly skilled.

If you were trying to blow up a plane are you going to send an Arab dressed in a native garb or are you going to try and get a older person, bitter and dress them like a westerner?

Seriously people, think about what you are saying. The only thing Israel profiles is behavior and actions.

Here is a prediction concerning item #1. Due to 'security concerns', Check point Charlie will be set up at each and every State border crossing. Similar to a semi truck weigh in station, ALL cars and trucks will be required to pull over for a 'security check'. There, your vehicle will be systematically dismantled in an effort to locate contraband or other 'dangerous' substances.

You and your fellow travelers will be subjected to a back scatter Xray machine and should you refuse, a full 'pat down' will be performed.

After you and your family have completed a back scatter xray or 'pat down' you will be herded into an interrogation room where you will be questioned for hours on end as to the nature of your trip. While being questioned, a very bright light will be shined in your face and should the interrogators feel you are lying, you will be injected with truth serum. You will be asked for a list of references who are willing to vouch for your statements concerning your reasons for travel. Should one or more of your references not check out, you will be arrested for "Lying to Investigators".

IF you are able to pass 'Check Point Charlie', you MAY be allowed to reassemble your vehicle and continue on your road trip. No tools or mechanical help will be provided to help you reinstall the engine, seats, tires, etc. However, if you are able to reassemble your vehicle, you will be allowed to continue your travel. Thanks for visiting 'Check Point Charlie'...have a nice trip!!!

Do you need pictures of the last 30 Muslim terrorists to prove your assertion to be ridiculous?

Besides- decoys are part of the plot by definition- so we'd catch decoys- which are as guilty as the ones who set off the bombs. Duh.

That's about right except profiling can also not single out disfavored minorities. Only white americans are not minorities these days. I think the abuse is already here- that's the abuse of spending tax dollars uselessly on security that does little. I agree with Craig- we should get our airport security from Israel- they have plenty of US citizens we can employ for the job.

Ben Gurion airport handled 10 million passengers last year. The 50th busiest airport in that year was Mexico City, which handled 24 million passengers. Memphis, Cleveland and Kansas City all handled more passenger traffic than Ben-Gurion. There is a huge differrence of scale between Israel and the US. Furthermore, Israel relies on their military for some airport security, a move that could run afoul of posse comitatus here in the states.

Twice since 911 the *terrorists* have penetrated the farce that is western airline security. Reid and the underpants dude. Nothing in the obscene western security apparattus was worth a damm in either case. Nothing but pure luck stopped them from succeeding.

To those who wish to pretend theres an equivalency between car crashes and airline terror I'd say you should wake up and smell the roses. You have control over your own destiny when you take to the road, enter a burger joint, whatever. You surrender that control to others when you are forced to fly. In addition to that you are now also forced to endure a mindless, obscenely expensive and demonstratably useless security fiasco in the cause of political correctness. Not only is this seriously inconvenient it's also dangerously stupid given the relevance of air travel to the modern economy. But that's ok, just as long as the "minorities" aren't offended.

If we had worthwhile security most "minorities" woudn't be offended anyway. But that kind of competence seems to be unreachable by choice in the US so I guess we wind up getting what we deserve.

- Peter.
