Red Light Cameras

Well, they've gone and done it.

US 27 is a 2 lane road/highway that my sub division is behind and I use it a lot to travel anywhere from where I live (Davenport,FL is in the middle of FL). I don't run lights and I try not to go through yellows unless I'm at speed and a car length or two from the line.

But I hate these things so much. I really hope some drunk redneck knocks one or three down or someone torches them.

I foresee more accidents at intersection where none really occurred.

You are ticketed for turning right on red if you do not wait longer than 5 seconds.

I went to the grocery store a few nights ago and I didn't have to turn at a light but when I walked out of the store I kept seeing bright flashes from the intersection.

Sure enough, damn red light cameras in action. $150 fine each flash. I see the city and county's revenues going up

I have seen a few news stories where the accompanying electronics were intentionally destroyed.

They open whatever electric box is nearby and have at it.

You should start homegrown terrorist group that tortures innocent surveillance equipment.

Ordinarily I cant stand increased surveilance and government intrusion, but this is one instance where I disagree. The number of morons that run red's is incredible and they need to have the book thrown at them.

There has been some discussion concerning which is safer: Traffic lights or STOP SIGNS. It appears a stop sign with a flashing light is the ultimate safety device. The flashing light tends to get people's attention and the actual STOP on the sign conveys the command. I've seen studies that have shown when a four way STOP SIGN intersection is replaced with traffic lights, accident rates soar. I wonder why?

Because traffic lights give the impression of taking away freedom - whereas stop signs allow you to remain in control.

you may be onto something. All I know is that when I approach a red light system, I am checking traffic to the left and right A LOT. A friend of a friend was recently in an accident involving a red light runner. The light had turned green, his car was the third car back.....as he entered the intersection, some woman in a cadillac hit him and spun him around three or four times....his car ended up bent and next to the curb. He was in the hospital for quite awhile after that. Unfortunately, he wasn't in a benz so he may have suffered additional injuries. Red light runners are out in full force and you have to constantly be aware of these idiots because they have no problem hitting you in the side at 60 MPH. scary.

Remove front license plate. For the rear plates, anyone know how effective the shields are where you can see it head on but not at an angle?

So far from what I've seen/heard NONE of the so-called shields/techniques have any effect towards tricking the cameras.

Furthermore, traffic lights are frustrating -- it's no fun when you sit at a red light for what seems to be ages and there is NO cross-traffic. If it were a stop sign, you'd be on your merry way after a brief stop. Not always so at traffic lights.

Then you have the numb-nut drivers who won't pull up far enough to trigger the sensor, and you sit even longer if you happen to be stuck behind them. I encounter this on my bicycle at least 2x/week. I'll pull all the way up and to the left at the traffic light on my way home so that anyone behind me still has room to pull well onto the sensor or even make a right on red if they need to, and yet folks still stop 2-3 car lengths back and will not pull forward. My bike and I do not trigger the sensor, so sometimes I sit there for 4-5 minutes waiting (or give up and walk my bike across the crosswalk during a break in traffic).

Seems like the red light cameras are taking over. If I remember right, they are a joint venture between the manufacturer and the city where they split the fines 50/50. Nice money maker.

Against the Law in Texas to run w/o a front license plate.

No, they don't work - or if the ones with the smoke-dark shading covers are being used - that is an offense too.

I can't find it but there is a great Top Gear news where someone in the UK set a Camera on fire and the police "deemed it to be intentional" hilarious.

Its against the law here too, but I've been doing it for years. I keep the plate on the dash, I talked to someone from the parking authority and he told me as long as its on the dash and visible I'm good.
