Uh, tolerance?

"Indonesia seeks prison sentence for 'blasphemous' American
Indonesian prosecutors on Tuesday sought a seven-month prison sentence for a US retiree accused of blasphemy after he allegedly pulled the plug on a mosque loudspeaker during a prayer reading. "

I guess 7 months is better than 5 years.....

Stupid is as stupid does.

But what does that say about Indonesia, if a mob can tear apart his house, and the police do nothing?

If you are going to hang out in other peoples' back yard, you better understand the culture and learn to stay out of trouble. It sounds like the police saved his dumb ass.

Back in the day, my old Navy ship steamed up the Bosporus to Instanbul for in-port liberty. A Marine got drunk in town and was arrested for apparently pulling off a woman's veil (and maybe other things?) Two days later we weighed anchor and left him there. Lord knows what ever became of him.

And speaking of dumb asses, any news on the 2 hikers still stuck in Iranian jail cells?

If a person did the same in the US at a Christian Church he would also be liable for arrest.

Absolutly no common sense or respect for other cultures comes to mind. An individual is entitled to think whatever he or she wants to. Acting on it is another totally different thing.

If you feel the need to assault peoples values there will be a price to pay. Hopefully he is just moderatly fined, run out of the country and barred from re entry. Why should their citizens land up supporting him for months of incarceration.

He's akin to those idiots who move to a home which they know is located next to an airport, then ***** about all those aeroplanes that are practically shearing off their roof shingles as they come in for a landing.

Followed by a slap on the wrist and "Don't do it again". Sorry, these people take their religion seriously. Stupid as people are, their land, their laws. Obey or leave.

Are you taking the position that these are tolerant societies? I'm certainly not. But what the man did would be illegal anywhere, the penalties are going to be appropriate to the culture. If US Christian-Right kooks ran the place, he'd get five years here too. I was just speaking with someone from that country, he says the reason the penalty is severe is because these types of acts can cause religious riots, and in a country like Indonesia where people are packed in like sardines, that can mean hundreds of deaths. I think they should have given him the whole five years. Heck, just read the news article:

Quote:
The August 22 incident in the middle of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan resulted in retired Californian engineer Gregory Luke, 64, needing a police escort from his home on Lombok island as a mob tore it to pieces around him.
I am sure that if this mob went on to kill a few hundred Christians, that would not be his fault, according to you, because his religion is of the correct flavor. In my view, this is a just law for their society and the guy got what he deserved, in fact, I think he got off easy. Tell me, what is the penalty for shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater?

Your house, your rules. Their house, their rules. Who are you to say they cannot have those rules? If you don't like it get the fawk out of their house. People from some countries might not like it that we get to carry weapons concealed. Tough. Don't let the door hit your azz on the way out. When you go to their house, obey their rules or fawk off. The math is pretty simple.

dont make me vomit: I was illustrating initially the amazing lack of tolerance on both sides of the issue.....he should have been more understanding of the prayer amplifier and they should not be so intolerant of those unlike them.
