Especially if it is freezing and my car is stuck on the street or in the driveway. On a summer night with nothing better to do, I will wrench on it. You do understand the simple law that for the most part, you car will have troubles in the worst area and at the worst possible time, right?
Well, I've worked on my MB on two different MB dealer parking lots with jackstands and my own tools and floorjack to save money R & Ring my alternator twice. One incident was 350 miles from home @ 30* with snow on the ground, and one was after dark at night with light from the service department's windows and a flashlight. Then, @ 98* in direct sun, 100 miles from home jerry rigging a patch on a punctured transmission cooler line in the parking lot of a cheap truckstop. I'm out to save money, and I will do it one way or the other. If you want to hire it done, fine, whatever floats your boat. Your pricing is far different than mine it appears, I can't control that. I save a ton of money when I can, and I wrench myself when I choose to. So, I don't really know what point is for me?

The point is this. What is your time and suffering worth? As I said, if the battery dies in my garage and I don't need to drive it tonight, it is worth the savings. If I save $100 but have to make multiple trips to chase down things and the weather doesn't cooperate, I'd rather hire it out. Right now, my Vette sits in my garage, tools are all around, I can fire up the heater and it is 70 degrees inside and 10 degrees outside, sure. It isn't worth it to me to save $200 to do the alternator outside, have to cart my tools all around and freeze my hiney off. I am a sadist NOT a masochist. I earn money so I can buy a better life for myself.

Not sure why either. How they quoted you $250 for a battery is beyond me. Like I said, maybe they got the wrong vehicle but I have gone to several different dealerships. Most of them have similar pricing that doesn't vary by more than $10 at the most.

I wrench when I choose to myself. I just choose not to when the threshold of discomfort gets too high. I know how far I would stick my neck out to save a buck. After that, I don't bother to save it and torture myself.
