2001 Viper
Just turned to the running Barret Jackson Car Sale in Las Vegas and saw a beautiful 2001 Viper with 11,500 miles sell for $32,000. I thought it would have brought $55,000 or more, or did the bottom drop out of these cars.

A friend of mine had one for a while; he referred to it as a "cartoon car." It's basically a PT Cruiser for people with too much money.

I know that some of the folks around here must like to look at them. They have them in the garage and never drive them. I can't really understand that. But I like that Craig, a 10 cylinder PT cruiser!

The bottom dropped out 10 years ago. In 2002 an early car was barely worth $30k. They've never been worth a lot used.

They are genuine super cars with relative simplicity mechanically. They are cartoonish but they get the job done. A lightly cloaked with velvet heavy hammer!
I normally beat them on the autocross course with my Miata though!

I'm sure they work, and they are cheap; but would you want to be seen driving one? They might as well just put a Viagra advertisement on the side. If I was looking for something in that performance/price range, I would just buy a vette, and I'm not a fan of vettes.

Nice cars, they can put down a ton of HP for not that much. Not everyone is hung up on the looks and you don't need to spend $300k+ on an exotic European car to go fast.

Yes, if you are looking for the best HP/$$ ratio, they are hard to beat.

I get annoyed at the Viagra crowed. Just as many middle aged guys buy Porsche's and Ferrari's, and a lot of jelled spiky haired guys are running around in 430's. Not everyone buys a Viper or Vette cause they can't get it up and are going bald. Some want to go fast, and don't want to drop $500k on a Carrera Gt.
I think the European car guys get jealous because the Americans can make a fast car for 1/3 of what there guys can. Vipers and Vette's allow you to go fast for $100k or less. At the track where BS walks they usually do pretty damn well. Plus you can fix the American cars, good luck trying to get a water pump for a GT over a weekend of racing, or a wheel and some suspension parts if you stuff it. Your weekend is over. I can go to Autozone and get a water pump for a Viper or Vette.

A Viper or Vette would be a good choice for a track car, but that's not how most of them are used. I would actually feel bad about thrashing a nice Ferrari or a Porsche on the track, but I would much rather spend $80k on a used 911 for street use (if I had any interest in spending that kind of money on a car). It isn't all about HP and top speed.

No it isn't but when I buy a fast car its about going fast, speed is where its at. Also as an American I'm quite proud of our cars getting the Europeans once in awhile.
American cars have come a long way, I think credit should be given where its due. A 1985 Vette has nothing in common with a 2010 ZR1 but the name. The ZR1 is a well engineered car and on par with anything that's made anywhere else. I think people base their perceptions off 15 year old vehicles, and quite frankly time march's on. 15 years ago GM's were junk, Toyota was king, and MB was on top. Now that's not quite the case. Toyota has fallen and GM is coming on hard.
