I would vote with my feet (by leaving that state) as soon as I could.
Paying exorbitant taxes OR expenses over 10, 20, 30 years is just nuts. There's just too much drag to overcome living in a place that is eating your cash like a Pacman. That's what keeps me in my small, affordable home for 25 years now. It's basically very cheap living when off the road. In Texas, there is no sales tax on grocery store food, so that helps, as well as no state income tax on earnings/dividends. No high priced heating bills, cheap electricity, low priced auto renewals. Life is pretty good in Texas, otherwise I'd be gone! The cost of living in a nice home in midtown/west Omaha plus state income tax was just nuts versus Texas. At least for me anyway.

1) Do you know why the state employee pensions have been under-funded through the years? Corrupt Politics, public systems not be forced to fund their systems at proper levels. EXTREME BENEFITS PROMISED TO THE UNIONS BY THOSE CORRUPT POLITICIANS. Those same unions contribute heavily to those politicians. If they had been forced to contribute at the level of private systems, the Poli's would not have given away such generous benefits. Per Teachers Retirement System In 2006, 860 retirees were receiving 8k+ / month (yes 96k), in 2010 that number is 2,803. AND over the next several years that growth rate will accelerate along with the $ amount increasing. It should be noted also that they receive FREE 100% Health care as well. Where is there a private pension system that allows you to retire at 55, or after merely 30 years and begin collecting immediately? Private systems make you wait until you are 62 or 65 to begin collecting. (58 sometimes with reduced benefits). Where is there a private pension system that bases your benefits on your final paycheck, including cashing of large amounts of accumulated sick, and vacations days ? Accumulated far in excess of what the IRS allows private employees to accumulate. Private pensions also cap your payout, adjusted for inflation, but it is capped. 2) Do you know why Illinois has had an artificially low 3% flat income tax? The income tax may have been artificially low, but the overall tax load WAS above average. Politicians nickel and dime us, the airlines learned the game well. WHY have/is the employee contribution to those pension funds been artificially low ? (Sometimes ridiculously low by private standards). WHY have/is the employee contribution to health insurance been extremely artificially low ? 3)Hint- their connected a) you believe all the union hype. b) you are a shining example of why IL students show such high national scores. Unions have destroyed the auto industry, the airlines ….. They are dragging down the states, how long before they crash and burn. The above issue’s with the public pension systems is not just the teachers, but all public pensions. Quote:
The problem is the corruption in Chicago, Crook County and the Il Senate. Read the current comments about Berios, look at the power controlled by Madigan(and Cullerton(His son just got probation for his 3rd, .188 DUI the first 2 were dropped ? And he was driving a state vehicle)) those 2 pretty much run the state how they please. And both profit off it handsomely in "their" own ways. Look at Berwyn and Betty Maltease. Remember Bell CA, well we have a city like that just south of Chicago. How about the city where if you have a liquor license you buy your insurance from one agency, owned by the mayor and head of the liquor commision. How about the state senators that give away scholarships to friends and relatives even though the state is broke and they are NOT supposed to go to friends etc. Look at Pagano and the RTA. OH and my favorite the Stroger legacy. Funny how the politicians pass their legacy to a son or daughter, aren't WE supposed to choose ?? (see Stroger, Jones ....) I know there is corruption everywhere in politics, We seem to have an abundance, although they are good at keeping it at arms length. Nail Daily, Madigan or Cullerton NOT A CHANCE EVEN AFTER H FREEZES SOLID. Unfortunately though given the Union vote in Chicago the downstaters have little voice. Bradley was comfortably ahead until the Chicago votes came in. He won 80% of the counties but lost Crook. Not saying he would have cleaned things up, but Gov Jello is a joke. OH last minute update. One of the outgoing Senators who voted FOR the tax hike, was suddenly appointed to a well paying (86k ) position. Coincidence, I've got a bridge for you !!!! And one final comment, be careful there are several legal positions that could limit in any situation or ELIMINATE in bankruptcy, the liability of the state/cities etc to fund those pension systems. Despite what appears to be a consituitional requirement. To another comment, I believe ALL states are required to have a balanced budget, but they can borrow to cover the deficit. Once we had Prohibition the Mob ran it an profited heavily. The government saw it, legalized it and taxed it. Once we had the numbers game, the Mob ran it an profited heavily. The government saw it, created Lotto and taxed it. Once gambling was in Vegas only, the Mob ran it an profited heavily. The government saw it, legalized it everywhere and taxed it. So did the Mob takeover the Government. Did the Government take over the Mob. Or was there a friendly merger ??

Whereas the average folk, IF they get a raise, it probably won't cover the income tax hike, much less their 10 or 20 % increase in health care premiums, much less still the inflation that is really out their. Despite government statistics that it is a t a low level. And I am not whinning about the increase, I find it total BS that our politicians that are "supposed" to represent us in an open and honest government, would 'behind closed doors' ram through an income tax increase via lame duck senators (I mentioned the first apparent deal came out today) that few want. More importantly without any spending cuts, in fact the future budgets are limited to a 2% INCREASE. So they can spend away again. I'll put 10 bucks, 2 to 1, that when these increases are 'supposed' to roll back, they don't, and another 10 says in 4 years they need to do it again. Well unless we can vote out 90% of the existing state government between now and then. Even that guarantees little though.

I have already stated that the bills need to be paid, and that I could understand a modest increase to take care of that. I'd expect the IL pols to have the sense to limit spending, too, though. Instead, they allow for increased spending. Par for the IL course. We are the laughing stock of the nation. Watch the news; it's pretty brutal. To be expected, given our leadership, though.

Brady liked to say how he was going to cut spending, everybody rejoiced he was going to save Illinois. Sounded great until that pesky question was raised in at least one debate I saw and other interviews; "How do you plan to cut spending?" What was Brady's answer, " I DON'T KNOW".
Gov. Quinn made no attempt to DENY he wanted to raise taxes through his whole campaign, He said he would veto anything over 1% but I did read in a few articles he felt 2% was what was needed. Both the Dems. and the Rep. have been reluctant to adress this problem in the previous years but this was what Gov. Quinn recieved when he took office. I read an article recently about the bond rating of the state and how he had no choice but to do what he said he was GOING TO DO THROUGH HIS WHOLE CAMPAIGN. Maybe you would be more comfortable electing some who tells you he will cut spending, but doesn't know how only to later raise our taxes but I applaud Gov.Quinn's honesty. NO dought it was political suicide. I don't know where that $600 figure, wev'e been kicking around came from, But I know I'll be paying much more than that, Oh well So far Gov. Quinn has been quite open as far as his intentions. |

$600 is 2% of $30,000.
$30k is not much of a salary.

Geesh on top of the 600 hundred you owe me, share what ever you're smoking. Remember BEFORE the election Gov Jello pounded the table that his 1% increase was the solution, he'd veto anything thing else, his 1% increase was the solution, he'd veto anything thing else, his 1% increase was the solution, he'd veto anything thing else, his 1% increase was the solution, he'd veto anything thing else, his 1% increase was the solution, he'd veto anything thing else. I think he threatened the death penalty to anyone that opposed it, which is why they repealed it. AGAIN if the Poli's would do something to curb the spending I might not oppose this, but this is nothing more than given a crack addict an extra pound and saying he'll quit after this. YEAH RIGHT. They owe billions to non profits, why are they giving to non profits ?? Then, and here's where you better worry. There is legal opinion that if the Politicians are shown to NOT have acted in favor of the voters that they are supposed to represent versus the pensions to the Unions. The pensions are invalid, in orther words the Poli's MUST put their consituents first. Even Rahm made the comment that we can't take away what we've promised the employee's. He's putting the wrong people first, and coming right out and saying it. A good legal challenge could all but invalidate the Chicago union pensions. Oh the 600 $ figure is based on the average 56ish k income in the state.

http://jg-tc.com/news/article_c34add5e-3e2c-11e0-9118-001cc4c03286.html Road fund raid decried by both Democrats and GOP By KURT ERICKSON, JG/T-C Springfield Bureau JG-TC.com | Posted: Tuesday, February 22, 2011 3:45 am | SPRINGFIELD - Democrats and Republicans alike who represent downstate Illinois are calling on Gov. Pat Quinn to put the brakes on a plan to divert money from the state's highway construction fund. As part of his proposed budget, the Chicago Democrat wants to spend $85 million from the state's main road repair fund on mass transit funding centered in Cook County and its suburbs. "I'm not in favor of that," said state Rep. John Bradley, a Democrat from Marion. "Road fund money is for roads," added state Rep. David Reis, R-Willow Hill. The opposition is just one more roadblock Quinn faces as he attempts to move his spending plan through the General Assembly. Along with concerns about proposed cuts to social service programs, the governor is being criticized for wanting to boost overall state spending by more than $1 billion at a time when the state remains mired in debt. "He's just not getting it," said state Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon. "To be shifting anything around right now is probably not very prudent." According to a House Democrat analysis of the proposed budget, Quinn would take $48.5 million out of the road fund to help Chicago area transit agencies pay for items like reduced fares for students, seniors and handicapped users. He also wants to tap the road fund for $37 million to help pay for Amtrak service, which has previously been paid out of the state's general checkbook. The road fund is financed by revenue from the state's gas tax, as well as various vehicle-related fees. The governor's budget estimates the state portion of the fund will be about $1.3 billion during the fiscal year beginning July 1. A longtime formula embraced by downstate lawmakers but disliked by Chicago-area officials has called for 55 percent of the road fund to go toward areas south of Interstate 80, with 45 percent reserved for road projects in northeastern Illinois. Bradley, who chairs the House Revenue Committee, says Quinn should adhere to that historic split. "Anything that would change that funding ratio, I would be opposed to it," Bradley said. While it's not clear if the formula will change, taking money out of the road fund for other purposes is not a new gambit by governors. During the early years of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's tenure, an estimated $2.15 billion in road funds were used for other purposes, including an expansion of health insurance programs for children. Quinn also investigated a plan to use road fund dollars to prop up the state's ailing general revenue fund. But, in September 2010, his budget office dropped the idea amid mounting opposition from Republican legislative leaders. Bivins and other lawmakers decried the latest budget move. "It's more smoke and mirrors," said Bivins. "It's just more of the same." "They are always looking for money from the fund," added Reis. A spokeswoman for the governor's budget office did not immediately return messages Monday.
