What the heck is the RPMs on an engine like that?

Just imagine the kinetic energy for it to make it through how many levels of metal and then arc through the air and land in someone's house? Or out in the yard...

How many pieces of that engine are we talking about here?

I dont think it's very high, all the engines are in there for is to generate power which go to traction motor in the trucs.. as for the Parts in the engine, there's 16 power units, one Crank... they took apart a motor on dirty jobs once. Spectacular to see

Locomotive engines run at 900-1000 RPM. That particular engine uses a master and articulating connecting rod assembly. It was probably dead reliable at 2500 HP, but increases in power find the weakness of the design- sort of like the 350 "rod bender"

Imagine the odds of that happening. You'ld have a better chance of winning the lottery and getting struck by lightning in the same day.

All it takes is one undertorqued cylinder bolt or a failed injector...

I have a piston and liner combo out of a V16 White, I use the liner as a doorway carpet weight/wastebin. The piston is just for looks.
The piston on top is from an Isuzu 4BD1T and the turbo is from a 3116 cat.

Decades ago was in a drag race, I was a passenger, buddies 440 GTX next to us.
Automatic, he had diddled with the brakes so he could lock the fronts, while leaving the rears loose.
He released the fronts, the rear end broke loose he said he saw the tach at about 8500 (6k red line) when the hood came off.
2 pistions from the driver side blew the head off, and the parts went through the hood.
Fortunately, my other buddy driving the car I was in (383 Road Runner), hooked them up well and we were gone before the parts came back to earth.

It was scary though.

I rebuilt the engine, the block amazingly was fine, he was a jerk. Ran wiper fluid in the raditor when anti-freeze prices went crazy one winter.
I heard a few years later he hit a street light dead center and trashed it.

Last I heard (4 or 5 years ago) my buddy still had the "Road Chicken" as he affectionately called it.
68 383, 4 speed with an overdrive unit where the drive shafts would be, I don't think he had 100k miles on it last I heard.
Totally tricked out.

Thats not bad in a pinch. Methanol + water were used as coolant for decades until glycol became the norm.

I worked in an old established repair shop back in the '70s. One of our customers had an old model "T" Ford that was his daily driver. In the fall he would bring it in and we would drain the water from the engine and fill it with kerosene. In spring he'd be back to have the kerosene drained out and the 2 radiator hoses replaced. He took the kerosene with him to burn in the heater that kept his chickens warm.
