Why are ML's so cheap?

What's the deal with prices on ML's? Are they that bad, or just the bastard child of the Mercedes lineup that never quite found a niche? They seem to depreciate almost as bad as a Land Rover!

Don't know. They started off with a bad rap and haven't shaken it off?

The early ones were just terrible.

They were "built to a suggested price" and in Alabama!
That build price was was too low, stay away from 1998-99 models for sure!

I've often wondered this, as well. About 2 years agao, when we were looking for a truck for my wife, we test drove a 2002 with ~65k on the odo. It was (seemingly) without fault. It sold from under us for 7k.

Because when I think of an SUV I'd buy an Explorer before and ML... not because the Explorer is better... but because they are equal in my mind, and why not pay less.

The G wagon, the Wrangler, and the Land Cruiser (Ending with the FJ80) are the only SUVs that stand apart in my mind. the rest of them are just traffic to be passed on the highway. A PowerStroke Excursion or even better a Centurion are also cool.

In defense of the AL plant in Vance, the early production did have faults, but their build quality in the years since has been exemplary, so put away those old prejudices. I'm looking forward to what they do with the C-Class production in a year or two.

I've been meaning to try a 2000 and newer out at some point. None have really popped up worth buying.

Its a 2002 with only 80,000 miles on it. Looks like it just got back from Jurassic Park. They are smoking dope on the $7200 price. The thing is salvage value now. My guess is the used car manager didn't bother looking at the roof when he made the trade bid.

Unbelieveable! Looks like it all stemmed from a leak in that seam, but that is a TON of rot for a 9 year old car (not that its in good shape by any means). That is a parts car at this point, providing anything inside works. $7200 is absurd

Had some very good times with a 98 ML320.

That thing was fairly indestructible. If you search the forum, theres some pictures of the torture it was put through.

Once been in an ML by sitting behind the wheel of a new ML in Metairie, LA. at the MB dealer about 10 years ago. Comfy, good visibility. Mileage? Reliability??
