You can dance around it all you like but I think it is self evident that guns are more effective at killing larger numbers of people than a knife it. If knives were more effective I suspect Hatt would be more inclined to have them by his bed side than all the guns he talks about. Were knives more effective and involved in more murders/deaths I suspect we would not be having this conversation. How many murders were committed by knife verses gun? I cannot find any stats but I would be willing to bet that guns win.

not dancing at all. you asked me my opinion. my answer was based on my training and experience. My actual preference would be long gun of some sort, then handgun of a sufficiently large caliber, a proper fighting knife, and lastly a club of some sort. I hope that for the rest of my life I dont have to use any of them in anger, but there it is.

different weapons for different scenarios too. bedside, a handgun is easy to put into play, but some prefer a shotgun. If I could get my hands on neither and needed to defend my family or myself, a knife would have to do.

Can we ban scissors too?

I feel like the government should force every citizen to eat at a government licensed dining hall where the chiefs and knives are registered with the FBI!

That is a truly horrible story.

Guns give an extra feeling of trump card power to a person. A knife can be deadly but not with the same sort of push-button ease that a gun can.

I do agree though, New York's gun laws are absolutely draconian.

The second amendment is a federally guaranteed right and should be regulated at the level. Not left to some idiots in state governments.

It takes a certain sort of mental readiness to use a knife in an assualt. A person has to get close and personal to do so.

Again, the myth that armed civilians will come to the rescue and not cause even more mayhem with their guns a'blazin . . . shooting the wrong person(s).

Imagine Plaxico getting grief for having a handgun securely held in the waste band of his sweatpants. Just whack.

I was very lucky. Honestly, it was a matter of seconds. Two, maybe three seconds between when I came through the doorway and when I was laying on top of [the real shooter], holding him down. So, I mean, in that short amount of time I made a lot of really big decisions really fast. … I was really lucky.

Infoplease figures, don't shoot or stab the messenger. 2007 homicide figures by weapon.

Shooting 14,831
Cutting or stabbing 1,796

I guess guns are much easier to get than knives, that explains the discrepancy. If you could just walk over to the kitchen counter and pick up an 8 inch chef's, I'll bet more people would get stabbed than shot.

More Americans die at the end of a scalpel than amateur night with a knife or gun and surgeons are extremely well regulated and highly trained. Obviously they remain a terrific threat to society. Let's ban surgery.

They have banned carrying knives (blades) in most public places down here & introduced stop & search. There is a certain amount of discretion. An old guy like me is not going to get done for peeling an apple in a park with a Swiss army knife.
