CNG trucks...
Anyone have any experience with CNG vehicles? My type of usage would work pretty nicely with CNG, so I was thinking about getting one next. Supposedly its about $1.80 per "gallon" compared to gas.
Ford and GM used to offer them for fleet sales but haven't in the last couple of years. Although with recent price increases they supposedly are going to offer them again. My uncle was talking to one of the managers at the gas company the other day and they used to buy them from Ford and GM all the time to use as fleet vehicles.

What's a home charging station cost for CNG? That would make it very convenient.

That's what I would have to find out, that's what I would want. For my use that would be ideal since it would be a work vehicle and I never put more than 100-125 miles a day on it at most, usually its a lot less than that. I could refuel at home and never have to worry about range or finding a station.
The point is not so much to save money as it is to not have to use oil. Also I want to support a US based fuel industry, that creates good jobs in this country. I just looked GM offers it on there work vans, they cost about $40k. It doesn't seem like much of a stretch to offer it in the Silverado. I wouldn't want an aftermarket conversion since GM does change the motor to run on CNG. They use harder valves and valve seats and up the compression, change the fuel injection system, etc. The motor itself is a $1,250 option over the standard 6L.

It'll save you not only oil to make diesel fuel, but engine oil as well. The change intervals running on CNG can be greatly extended.

Yeah from what I know on small equipment I could probably run 50k+ mile change intervals with a good synthetic.
Natural gas burns very clean, the little motors that run it always have clear honey colored oil.

CNG is sold at Quick Chek stores here, right alonside the gas & diesel. $1.65/gallon. Lots of city vehicles in OKC use it, along with businesses. Its a great idea.

CNG is effectively our future. Unfortunately, it's massively blocked by corporate politics.
CNG works fantastic in Europe and South America. No problems whatsoever. I have a friend who's manufacturing/importing tanks, amazing technology, extremely high safety levels, yet he can sing a song on how the future for it in the US is jammed up. We have resources to fuel our motor vehicles for the next 100 to 150 years. Go figure.

What do they mean by gallon, when selling CNG? Energy equivalent to a gallon of gasoline?

I'm wondering if home compressing stations might be dicey. Compressing a highly flammable gas leaves a lot of room for calamity. Hate to sound like a wuss but somehow I think eventually such 'stations' are bound to go wrong in a big way, with much breathless news coverage after.

I don't think it can completely replace oil, but I don't see why in a few years with a bit of effort we could say use it in 30%-50% of the cars on the road and end our dependence on imported oil.

30-50% would be an enormous accomplishment and improvement over the present situation.
We could get right to work and move in this direction, which ultimately would preserve a great deal of our freedom and independence as a nation. The "old world" and the "3. world" can do it. Why are we not doing it?
