Are you saying if you are late because of a medical condition you get a slap on the wrist?

If that happened over here in a state school. The parent would probably contact their local member of parliament. There would be a hell of a ruckus, the person who did the deed would get in a bit of trouble & the student would probably be offered private tuition, paid for by the school for the amount of time they missed.
Now if there was any other background information we dont know about, this may turn out different.

Sigh, Estemmed colleague, you keep imposing logic into a system that has none.

It's the Western version of the old Soviet saw: "We pretend to learn and they pretend to pay us"

So...... if you show up with your parent a few minuets late, it doesn't matter - there's no grace given? Parent explains the situation which should be the last word on this situation and it still doesn't matter? The parent is a woos.

Rules are important but then so is fairness. Rules not only need to be fair but they need to have the appearance of being fair. The school's position is niether fair nor does it have the appearance of fairness.
Even as a young kid in grade school I already knew when something the teacher said or did was fair or not. We may have complained but everyone knew that they either deserved what they got or they didn't at all. When you place someone or something in a position of power they often don't know what to do with it because they never had the idea of ethics and fairness taught to them.
This notion of ethics and fairness usually comes from our parents or those around us. Most yound kids have little interest in government today and maybe that's a good thing considering the way most of our elite politicians act today.

Situational etics aside, what does this say for the future of a lot of kids today?

OP says his mom took the kid to the office, he doesn't say whether she attempted to make any explanations for him or just dropped him off.

Welcome to Florida. The ignorance in the school system here is so broad it's astounding. Like the OP stated, the school bus can be late for whatever reason and it's not a problem. The last time my son's bus was late it was because the driver overslept. None of my children has ever served a detention, nor will they for anything so trivial. I would have just taken my child home and have them been absent rather than serve their detention. Absolutely ridiculous.

She should have taken the time to insist on seeing the principal, and still can as a matter of principle. I wouldn't drop this if I were your mom. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and whoever's in charge of that school needs to hear parent dissatisfaction. It's common for schools to put kids in the front office as part of some BS cost saving measure and to give kids "work experience" for which they get class credit. Those kids shouldn't be charged with making the decision to send another kid to detention. I'd b!tch and b!tch loud.

I've taught Jr. High for 31 years, including administrative positions. I know what I'm talking about.

Its good to see some one from the education system expressing a view. Some on here who are known to be from the education system have been surprisingly quiet.
