I'll also second the ginger suggestions. We recently went through a comprehensive ginger ale/beer tasting and found that all the members of the group agreed, Cock 'n Bull ginger beer was the best. Stewarts and Reed's (preferably the red cap "extra") were also good.

As for a bourbon mixed drink, look for reciepes for a "Kentucky Blizzard", key ingrediants of bourbon and cranberry juice. I'll try to remember to post the reciepe from home tonight.

I prefer scotch, single malt, vs, bourbon an American concoction, a blend of whiskey and corn liquor.

Burbon can only be called that if produced in the US, cool, I think, just as champagne can only be called that if produced in a certain region in France.

Water dilutes, sometimes in a good way.

Ice will dull the taste buds, which is why cheap beer and wine are served cold, you can't taste it.

I do enjoy scotch straight or in soda.

On the rocks with a splash of sweet vermouth (dash of bitters if you've got em), maybe a cherry. Viola you've got a Manhattan. Maker's and Wild Turkey are my favorite cocktail/mixing bourbons; but as others have said, they do just fine by themselves.

Any bourbon worth drinking should neat and room temperature. Same with Scotch.
I'm presently sampling some Knob Creek bourbon, and I'm liking it. Maybe a good thing it's rather expensive.

I'll give neat and room temp a try. I dont like hard alcohol on ice anyways. I just figured adding water would help bring out the flavor over the alcohol.

Oh, and AFAIK, it can only be called Bourbon if from Bourbon County, KY.

Requirements must be met to legally be called "bourbon". Being produced in a certain area is not one of them.

Update: Tried Maker's Mark and thought it was nice. Next one I went to was Wild Turkey 101 (I add a bit of water to that stuff) and I think i like it better. Not as smoky as Maker's Mark, more sweet.

Tried Jim Beam too. Made me puke.

Good Bourbon like Scotch should be drank neat and at room temperature.

At most a splash of mineral water should be added to both, some claim it "wakes" up some of the flavor, but I'm not so sure.

If you ever get a chance to go to a tasting, do it. I go to the Macallan tasting everytime it comes through town. I've got to get onto more mailing lists, I guess. Not only do you get to try vintages you may not want to have to pay for, but they give you a lot of interesting background and it's generally a lot of fun.
