School BS...

Just finished watching The Cartel, on Netflix about public school waste. IMHO it was right on.

Students in New Haven just marched on the Mayors office because they were pissed that teachers were getting laid off while there school had 7 assistant principles getting paid 6 figures with very lavish benefits and retirement packages. The administration in this city is just amazingly bloated.

WTF money is not going to fix our public schools, we could spend a trillion bucks and nothing will change. Or as one principle put it so perfectly, "if you want to see how bad a school district is go to the administrative HQ parking lot and count the number of Mercedes you see. The more you see the worst the district."

Totally agree, many public schools are mismanaged and do not let their funds trickle down to the front line of teachers. Its certainly not limited to public schools, just our taxpayer money makes it more visible. Teachers are extremely under appreciated.

Being fat at the top in education bureaucracies isnt unique to your part of the world. Most public school systems are full of fat cats. Basically "Too many chiefs & not enough Indians !!"
40 years ago a high school with 600 students would have 1 principal & 1 assistant principal. Not any more!! They have a team of people above the principal as well now.
The other issue is that teachers dont necessarily make good managers (principals) so we end up with 1/2 a dozen poor managers to do 1 job. They should all be still in the class rooms teaching.

Well lets see, I gradeated about 40 years ago, Prospect had 2500->3000 students, 1 Principal, 2 (might have been 3) assistants, one was facilities administrator non-student/education related. He was in charge of the physical campus.

I see it all the time in my city, the Mayor says we need to cut funding for the schools. Which really isn't a cut, its an increase but a cut in the increase if you follow. So instead of getting a 3% increase for the year they get say a 1.5%.

Now the board of ed gears are turning they go out to the parents, threaten to lay off teachers, close schools, destroy little Johny's future. The kids being manipulated along with some stupid parents go out and protest, etc.

Its a cycle, all so the administration can have catered breakfast meetings every Friday, an maintain a number of lavishly paid redundant positions in administration. Cause its a freaken crime if you can't have the house on the beach and the newest E350, 5 series or Lexus, screw the kids. Bad principle that any private company would fire so fast his head would be spinning? No problem, 30% salary increase, with a BS position down city hall, also he needs a secretary. Fire them? Oh no, oh no.

Look at the pay of ANY federal worker compared to a private sector worker that has the same job, and sometimes better qualifications/more experience. It's not just the educational admins.....although this highlights the hypocrisy quite well. Notice that cuts of anything substantial (fat cats paychecks) are never an option, it's ALWAYS cuts of stupid nickel and dime crap that adds up to nothing other than the fact they can point and say "Well look, we cut something".

My last year (year 12 ) of high school was 1973. I went to a small country school, hence the smaller school size.
Your post just highlights how top heavy schools have become.
When people realize they can easily pay for 2 teachers for the cost of a AP, who probably is lucky if he takes 1/5 of a teaching load, we would hope that the schools get back to a lean leadership profile.

now all we need to do is to add a federal health care administration....... you think principals make a lot, wait till they layer on 5 or six layers of medical beuracracy, which since they are doctors pulled to the position they will need to be compensated, they will be raking it in.

Being at AP level doesn't mean you have to do AP duties. Sometimes the advancement tiers are set up that way. Just saying before you guys go all nuts. (too late)

You could say the same thing about public schools around here too.
