New York Auto Show...

Just got back, it was a lot of fun.

Mercedes had a lot of nice cars did, GM had there own wing! Wow GM is really coming back strong!

My favorite new car if I was buying one would be the Audi S5, with the manual. IMHO its the best sports coupe out their. I sat in the Caddy and there were a couple of things I didn't like. First your really sitting in the car, the door sills are very high. Also instead of door handles GM uses these silly electric buttons which I don't like.

The Audi OTOH feels just right, the shifter feels good, the clutch is slightly heavy but not objectionable so. It also has that fantastic German interior which I like so much. Plus it has AWD so with a set of snow tires would be a blast in the snow, I could drift it sideways around the corners like a rally car!

The Volt is also a very nice car for the money, IMHO its a better car than the Prius not counting the mileage, its better built and nicer inside.

One trend I don't get the Germans seem to have a hard on for is that flat paint, I don't know looks stupid. AMG is also falling into the trap of sticking crap on their cars. They had a nice white E63 their with a black carbon fiber spoiler on it that stuck out like dogs balls. Not exactly understated MB.

Also from what I can tell the hood on the new W212 doesn't go straight up anymore? When did MB stop doing that? That was a very nice feature.

The new Jag XJ is amazing! Loved everything about it, including the retro 80's blue leather interior. Fantastic, modern British car, really would consider it over the W220.

Yeah Matte finish...it's odd.

Focus groups and Mercedes aim to sell to a younger demographic is sadly pushing them to do BMW like things.

W221 dear boy

My theory is it was thought up by people who have never owned crappy cars. My old VW's for example had a mat finish because they were faded!

Having owned crap cars with crap paint, the thought of perfect paint, that looks 5 miles deep is appealing. If I had gotten a new ride at 16 not so much.

Next they will sell them with factory rusted hoods.

MB needs to refrain from having 17 year old idiots provide input on their designs. If you want to buy a gaudy German car get a BMW, MB should be for the thinking person. Trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator who got lucky with a few bucks is a bad idea. A proper performance or luxury car should be confident enough with itself that it doesn't need to advertise to everyone what it is. The tacky carbon fiber crap AMG is sticking on the E class is a good example.

IMHO this is what Audi does so right, and MB used to with the 500E and first gen E55 AMG. The point is to build a Q ship, not to advertise the owners insecurity.

There performance should speak for itself, leave the tacky stick on crap to the ricers.

Perfect example.

Well, my theory is MB really only cares about the expensive cars. The CL, SL, and S are still rather nice, as is the G.

You should check out the 2011 G wagon gauges, IMHO much nicer than the old ones. Other than that no changes.

Somebody let me know when they build something as nice as that 300SEL 6.3 again.

I also hate to see them sell cheap cares in the US, including the c-class, but they do have to maintain a certain sales volume.

S65 AMG. Doesn't need to advertise and will take anyone's breath away when they step on it.

About $220,000 new.

I'm sure it has amazing performance, it's just not very interesting.

Something with a little more character, especially if it has survived a few decades of actual use

Demographics drive design and marketing; just like music and fashion, and each generation will criticize the next.
