Got torque?

Or when you need to pull start a D8.

As a side note its a shame you can't get a Cummins in a Ford, best truck with the best motor.

The cummins is a torque monster! I would not want to try gettting the rail car moving with my stick equipped Dodge!

Impressive!

The Toureg has almost as much torque as the cummins.

Well actually the VW has much more, difference is that you looking at 6.7L Cummins truck engine VS 5.0L VW SUV engine....
Cummins is only 98 ft-lb more. In their production figures this working something like Cummins is 97ft-lb per liter and the VW is 112 ft-lb per liter
If you think liter VS torque....the VW is way ahead, perhaps you've missed the part that for this test they put additional 4500 lb of sand inside bringing the total curb weight to a whopping 11000 lb. This is the same as Dodge Ram 4X4 Quad cab...now dropping all this into the pot and I am sorry to say but the Cummins is a loosing battle.

If the rail car is empty, it is more like 60,000 lbs, still a lot, but steel wheels on steel track has low friction once you get it moving. Remember a 1 degree grade will get one going.

Let's say we check back after 250K miles.

Then lets check back after 500K miles.

And finally let's check back after 750K miles.

And then we will see who is fighting a loosing battle!

Don't get me wrong, the Toureg is an impressive machine but with its 10 cylinders, two turbos and four camshafts I suspect it will not be around when the cast iron pushrod single turbo cummins will be still purring along.

Absolutely. A 5' pry bar under a wheel will get a railcar going.

One place I worked had some rail cars and a little track for doing rail impact testing. On the flat part of the track, five guys could get a flat car moving, though not very quickly.

Just drop the clutch, it will either move or something will break! I have seen guys twist the drive shafts out of dump trucks like that.

The Cummins is a real truck motor and a straight 6 the VW's isn't. Its also hooked up to a beefed up gear box, drive shaft and rear end. I doubt you can get the VW with 4:10's or lower out back.

I believe the new Dodges put down over 800ft pounds of torque.

Night and day, can't really compare the two.

When all is done & dusted, you cant beat cubic inches !!

years ago CAT came out with a range of turbo 4 cylinder road graders (Little screamers), over hear they were the 130 G, many replaced old 12G's (6 cylinder large capacity) graders. The little screamers were just not up to the job of the old over engineered ones.
Some how I think the Cummins is not tweaked to the max like the VW would be.

I personally know the owner of the red Dodge, you have no idea of the hell it's been through. I believe it has over 12,000 hours on it. It also regularly tows a JD 830 set up for pulling, it weighs near 20K by itself. And Hattie, that lousy Dodge is still on it original auto trans. It's been run so hard that the exhaust manifold is starting to shrink from the heat, it's actually bending the studs on the head.

With minor changes, it is capable of more than 1200 ft lbs of TQ...

A buddy of mine has one with a Bully tuner, increased exhaust size and twin turbos that has produced over 1100 ft lbs. Truly an amazing engine. I'd love to see Ford pull the licensing from dodge and start putting them in their line of trucks...the best of the best.

Yep the dyno numbers don't always tell the whole story.

A Cummins is built to work at probably 80% for 500k miles between overhauls. The VW diesel is built for car use 200k maybe, can't overhaul it.
