good; the damage they have done to the world needs to be curtailed. While the GWOT folks are at it, perhaps they can get rid of the Taliban too.

It's good to know we are making progress on the "war on terror"...
...unfortunately, like the "war on drugs', there is always someone eager to replace the fallen...

part of the problem, IMHO, is that we have not gone after enough foreign sources bringing drugs into the country. Since it is a national security issue, lets put some of the gee whiz weapons and resources our military has at hand and take out a LOT of these scum. Make it hard enough, they will stop, and the gene pool will be improved. |

Do you stop the supply?..or do you stop the demand? Which one..supply, or demand...is the active ingrediant? I suppose that if you cut off the supply..addicts will find other substances to abuse. And if you cut off the demand..the suppliers will find another market for their product.

He's the ops mgr for the main franchise, that's pretty well an openly-known fact.
Whether he gets a promotion or not will probably be announced through the various supporting websites.

I forget, how did that all work out for Gen. Lemay? There was considerable opposition to "bombing them back to the Stone Age." I don't think that has change yet.

It didn't work worth a crap in WWII, Korea or Vietnam. Air Wars never win a damned thing. They prepare the terrain for foot soldiers. In GW I and GW II the Air Force (including naval) were finally used to good effect -- air superiority then support of ground forces. The results were two of the finest moments in military history -- complete route of the defender, minimal losses to the aggressor, minimal loss of infrastructure and noncombatants. Few wars have ever been fought so effectively. The aftermath? Not so good.

Isn't the war on terror being fueled by drugs? Are not the poppy fields still growing, year after year? The same or similar thing is happening along the US / Mexico border. No one from Mexico is trying to bomb US targets but the threat is just as real. The difference is these guys are doing it for the money - the Taliban are doing it religious or radical reasons.
One side is selling drugs for the money and the ther side is selling drugs to fund their millitary and religious ambitions. Imagine if I, Joe farmer, were allowed to grow pot only because that's the only thing I know how to grow and it's the only crop that would provide enough money for me to survive. Another country has a millitary presence in my country and they allow me to continue growing this stuff because they want to gain my trust in them. Meanwhile, a sneaky, cowardly, nasty, dirty, stop at nothing, bunch of guys is roaming around the country side with the aim to send everyone back into the 7th century using AK47's as proof they mean business. When the miliatry is away they come and harass me. When the millitary shows up they run and hide and then shoot the odd one in the back when they aren't looking. Or, they bow them up with roadside bombs. Sometimes they blow up everyone including they guy holding the bomb. They don't care - they're all nuts. I sell my pot to them for pennies and they buy more guns with the millions they make. If I don't grow enough they shoot my wife. If I don't sell all of it to them they shoot my son. If I get too friendly with he millitary, they shoot me. They don't kill me, they just shoot me up a bit. If I die it's no loss to them. The poppy plant is like most plants - it can be killed with Roundup. A few Roundup bombs and the whole years production is gone. It's very easily done yet the US and NATO have resisted. If you really want to mess someone up there are soil sterilants that keep things very dead for a couple of years - nothing grows. Would it not be cheaper to buy out the poppy farmers, who live on dirt, than it has been to wage war on these piss ants? |

^^Clearly if rebels finance their activitys through smuggling and drug running as the Taliban do in Afghanastan, reducing that flow of income has multiple effects.
Rebels often thrive on smuggling goods bound for Western markets. A reduction in heroin prices in Europe for example, would have directly reduced the smugglers revenue earned by the Taliban as they rose to power in the mid 1990's. The same is true of rebels in Afghanastan today and possibly also in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, where opium profits often make rebel forces better armed and better paid than government troops. The revolutionary Armed forces Of Colombia (FARC) is another terrorist organiseation that finances itself with revenues from the drug trade, in this case from cocaine. (The Bekka valley east of Beirut, where Hezzbollah was initially established, was a major opium production and distribution center during the Lebanese civil war, under the protection of Syria, though it's unclear if Hezzbolla gained revenue from production). Legalizing drug use-that is, treating illicit drugs as controlled substances that are legal to grow and regulated by the government- has other social costs. Yet it might be worth considering as a way to stabilize Afghanistan, Columbia and perhaps western Pakistan, where the government is outgunned and outbribed by wealthy narcotics traders. Petroleum is legal, of course, but by the same token, curbing global demand for petroleum would not only have environmental benefits. It would also reduce funds available for donations to Islamist terrorism and to Islamist social services provided by rebel organisations that compete with governments, not only in the Middle East, but in many other parts of the Muslim world as well.
