This change in policy is actually in response to a Federal Court Order from 2005. It says that if there is a legal driver able to drive the car away it cannot be impounded.

The 'reasonable time limit' is about one second. If there is not a legal driver in the car to drive it it will still be impounded. If the driver cannot produce a valid ID they are still subject to arrest, and this is the case with anyone.

Sam Francisco and other large California cities have had this policy in place since 2005. It is to keep drivers that have no permits from crashing through checkpoints in order to flee which was something that did happen from time to time.

The LA Times did a big article on this on April 29, 2011 which is probably still online.

And... The Latino group that was pushing for LA to follow the guideline of the Court Order was the Southern California Immigration Coalition. Juan J. Gutierrez and his group have so far has had no comment on this and had nothing to do with getting this in place.

The way I read that article, they don't have two sets of rules anymore. Before the change in policy, a legal citizen without a license was given a reasonable time to get a licensed driver to drive the car away. Illegal immigrants stopped at checkpoints had their cars towed automatically. Now the rule is the same for everyone. Seems OK to me.

Particularly so if the criminal in question is on their way to your domicile to clean, do the laundry or mow.

Different Rhetoric in Alabama

Brooks hails from Alabama, where governor Robert Bentley recently signed one of the toughest immigration laws in the nation; among other things, it mandates that public schools check students' immigration status, allows police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants stopped for other reasons, and criminalizes giving a ride to someone you know to be an illegal immigrant.

Like Arizona, Law Enforcement is Not On Board with Immigration Law

"If we do arrest these folks, how are we going to house them? What are we going to do with them when we get them?" he said. "Also, if we arrest someone who has children with them, what do we do with the children? A lot of these things are not clearly defined and it's going to add a lot of expense and put more burden on law enforcement and other public governmental entities, such as the Department of Human Resources."

Clearly you've not been there. It has its charm.

A careful reading of the actual article shows that things have been equalized and illegals are now receiving the same treatment with respect to their cars that citizens have. That's all it's about. It's not about busting illegals, and it's not about drunk illegals being allowed to drive away. Big deal.

Have you been there? Border towns don't count. I have a hard time imagining why anybody'd want to enter Phoenix, but that's because I was born there and know a few things about the place.

Maybe it's a matter of incrementalism. The next step may very well be to give them legal status upon graduation, once again side-stepping the proper channels to receive citizenship.
That same "dream act" was passed by the MD General Assembly. However, due to a major petition drive, it was not signed into law, and will appear on the next MD General Election Ballot, which happens to be the Presidential election. This represents a blot on Gov. Martin O'Malley's Presidential aspirations. We may have saved the country from a disaster.

We used to have those all the time in the summer. Back then, Phoenix was an island surrounded by a sea of desert and giant dust storms would often roll in before summer thunderstorms. Now the place is so built up and paved over and spread out that it takes a real honker like that one to make it all the way into the valley.

No. Nor will I. Having spent my entire life trying to get the hell out of the third world the concept of actually spending money to enter it again is ludicrous to me. Yes I know there are a bunch of tourist traps like Cabo etc, that the locals (here) are always going on about. But I have no interest in enduring all the third world bs just to go look at the sea which can be done more conveniently in SanDiego. (especially as I grew up on a coast that was much like Baja California anyway).

Almost every person I have ever met that comes from a third world country has some sort of inferiority complex..I am not sure that migrateing to the U.S. ever erases it- 'You can take the boy out of the country-but you cant take the country out of the boy'

I don't have an inferiority complex chilcutt, I just happen to have wasted enough of my life in a ****hole and see no reason to spend any more time in one let alone actually make an effort and spend money to do so.

I didnt finger you Cole..and completely understand why you would not want to waste money on a **** hole place. Dont forgert, I have seen plenty of these places. Some of which I would not enter unless I had an auto-matic rifle, and a small brigade of Commando's.

You are entitled to your opinion...thanks for shareing it.

DUI checkpoints shouldn't be "papers please." They should just check for DUI, not be an excuse for a general sniffing expedition. (I've been stopped in NJ, and they're only allowed to check for intoxication, not run your license unless you were doing something else illegal.)
