Whether it is an insult or not who cares. You cannot fight science. People did not like the idea that the earth was not the center of the universe/solar system. I didn't mean to suggest that we evolved from chimps. I just think it's funny when people get offended when someone says that we did. I have not studied evolution since high school biology class (1972-73 school year!), although I read the occasional article now and then. My understanding is that we did not evolve from chimps, but we share a common ancestor. Or something like that.

It would not bother me in the least to learn that we did evolve from chimps. Would it bother you? If so, why?

In the religious view, especially jewish, christian and muslim, humans are a special creation, we are "other" than the rest of nature. The rest of nature was put here by god for our benefit. What a happy way of seeing things. Since we're outside and not a part of nature, we can exploit it all we want and yet don't have to take responsibility for anything that happens to it.

I don't disagree, but would say religion expanded and was elaborated after ag developed. I still see it's roots pre-ag. What else explains elaborate Neanderthal burials, complete with personal items carefully arranged? While they didn't have as much time to sit around contemplating the infinite, I still think hunter-gatherers were thinking about the big questions:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What is my fate?
Where are the cookies?
