Compared to paying for congressmen to ride around in expensive transport and so forth this seems hardly anything to get excited about.

Coffee and rolls? Would corporate folks in the private sector have them at a meeting? If they felt like it. They also fly first class or in corporate jets if they can afford it and feel like it.

Would I do it? I probably would go more low key.

We really live it up and bring in a Box O' Joe, a dozen donuts and a dozen bagels w/cream cheese for our meetings or a sandwich, chip and soda assortment from the deli across the street if it's a lunch meeting. Less than $4 a head for a morning or about $9 a head for a lunch and everyone is happy.

Although, as cheap...err...frugal...as we are, we try to schedule our meetings to coincide with a manufacturers' training session and they'll pick up the tab.

Imagine, if you can, what the innovation, design and fabrication environment was like in the US 100 years ago versus now. We have gone backwards as a society in that regard in my opinion.

How much gov assistance did Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak receive in order to develop the Apple I? How'd that work out for them?

Keep in mind too B that if there were money to be made in some of these ventures that went bankrupt deep pocket companies like Exxon Mobil, Southern Company and Duke Energy (to name a few) would be involved.

On the other hand, some government sponsered projects have gone rather well.... lets see...... WW2, the interstate highway system, and the space programs come to mind...also the trans contintental railroad, and the Panama Canal.

Public education, the GI bill and the Marshall plan.....

Naturally I imagine there were some others which did not work out as well, like the canal system and the Viet Nam war.

Are those like IN THE WAY BACK PAST events? Past great performance only goes so far. Last century's wonder doesn't mean squat today. The question is "What have you done for me LATELY?". I am not interested in "has been" items. Sure, past greatness might buy you a little leeway but recent poor performance is a major issue.

Was WWII invented in a garage by two college students? No. Analogy fails. Actually, governments CAUSE wars. Now there's the government's inventive spirit in action!

But the government has invented one thing with the undeniable ability to change lives: The atomic bomb.

What, it only counts if done in a garage by two college students?

Silly.

For decades we have politicians getting elected saying that government can't do anything right. Once in office, they put all their energy in making sure that doesn't change.
