is this pc any good?

someone wants to trade his computer for one of my mowers.

the mower is worth ($70)

the only specs I have on this computer is:
HP
2.66 ghz
75 gig hd
1 gig ram
16" monitor

based on this skimpy info, is this a decent trade assuming the computer works?

The mower wouldn't make a good doorstop, sounds like a good trade.

I generally don't like to buy used computers. I never know how you operated them. Besides, this computer is pretty old. Do you really need a computer like that and what for?

No its worthless, what are you going to run with 1G of ram and a 75G hard drive? Windows 98?

My computer just surfing the interweb takes 1.5gig's with windows 7 running the latest Firefox.

It will make one heck of a door stop.

XP and a light browser would work just fine with those specs. (I still have a Thinkpad with 512 MB that works fine for web surfing.)

Despite what the advertising touts would like you to think, you don't need the latest and greatest just to access media.

For a $70 mower its not necessarily unreasonable if it had a lot of new components, but its a 10 year old used computer so who knows how many hours its been on, how much abuse its been through, etc. I would expect to replace at least the power supply...I got a nearly identical 2.5ghz computer for free and before I knew it, I had replaced the motherboard, hard drives (had some sitting around), power supply, and memory to keep it working. Now it just sits because I got a 4200+ Dual core PC for free and did the same. I would take the $70 cash.

It's pretty sad that one needs so much ram and processor just to web browse.

It depends on the processor. If it's a Pentium 4 I wouldn't take much for it. If it's a Core2 Duo or Centriono, etc, then it's worth having.

True but it don't hurt to have it. In fact, it makes it more pleasant as opposed to waiting. I have a later model laptop and an older one. One of them loads up the images faster than the other. One is 2 yo and the other is 10.

When it comes to simply loading a page with little to no graphics, it might come about the same but where there are a lot of other things going on in the background, the latest and greatest will make some difference. Even with apps too.

Need? Probably not. But I don't need 10 million dollars in my bank either. It won't hurt to have it and probably make me feel a lot better.

^^^

Just shows how spoiled American brats are -- assuming a P4+ something with specs like that would work fine for web surfing, typing, even light photo editing.

It would probably work fine for web surfing. That doesn't make it worth a lot of money.

I wouldn't use it because if it's a P4 it's going to suck down a ton of electricity. I run an old P3 juice sipper for my home server to keep my electric bill down.

He was asking if it was worth a $70 trade, not if it would surf the web. Of course it would surf the web without any problems, my 1st gen netbook surfs the web, so does my phone but that isn't the question. It isn't worth the $70 trade - maybe if all the components were new (i.e. if it was brand new in the box) but certainly not after 10 years of use. FWIW I use a similar box as a media center PC, hooked up to my TV.

The real question is, will it be as useful to him as the mower will be to the other person? If yes, then trade away.
