I think a wise, ethical company could wage an effective ad campaign to the contrary---that our products are a little more expensive, because of the way we leave a cleaner environment etc.
Properly done, that would sell in today's culture.

The same concerns are being voiced in my area.
There have been numerous ads placed by ANGA depicting a cross section of the earth and how the gas drilling will be much deeper than any water well. It's another case of "figures don't lie but liars can figure". The various strata of rock shown in the ad all run parallel to the surface. The true alignment of the rock strata is an undulation that stretches from the surface to thousnads of feet down. This is due to a continental collision between the North American plate and the African plate some 200 million years ago. The gas companies are lying and wouldn't you know the usual suspects are defending the gas companies.
