A little tinkering today [a couple vacuum leaks, greasing the throttle linkages, etc...], charged up the battery, a fresh trans fluid change [to proper fill level ~was 2 quarts low], an oil/filter change and it's starting, running/performing much better Starts quickly, no more lag when selecting gear and a much more steady/firm pull of the turbo. I had to put the OEM wheels on to drive it because the lugnuts came but in the wrong size.
Lots to do yet though. The vents didn't blow anything, turns out the blower motor I found in the trunk must have been removed and never replaced. Front shocks and mounts are shot. Exhaust still hanging and loud but I haven't got under it yet. Likely going to get pushed back until after the holidays but its been a fun few days |

Nah, I'd just go crazy knowing all the time [and maybe the money] I've wasted, LOL!
Got the CLK wheels on good enough to drive it around the development a bit today after a little more tinkering. I just cut the OEM lug bolts down about 12mm with my air cut off wheel ~ 3 lug bolts on each wheel for now [saved the rest for the spare which will require using the old lug bolts] until the correct lug bolts arrive. I'm pretty sure the emergency brake is hanging up. The turbo seems to boost great in reverse but lacks power forward ?? Looks a little better on the damaged side just with adding the CLK wheels........ I also did some work on my 6.2 diesel G20 Chevy cargo van and took it out for a drive. It's a rare one too having a factory 4 speed manual trans in the floor, dual A/C, power windows, locks and cruise control in an otherwise stripped down base cargo. It's my "back to the 70's" hippy van project that I've gull winged the side door on and have plans taking it back in time [as well as myself, LOL!]. |

I don`t think I have ever seen a W201 with the lovered R/F fender, seen it on the W124.
Now what is rare on this car is the R/F fender. that one would be hard to find. Once you go through all the systems and get it running good, you could always swap in a 5-spd manual trans. Charlie

It's definately a love/hate relationship. Frankly, I wouldn't bother but the wife adores these damn things, LOL
Nice area! I lived in Bristol about 2 miles from the race track back in the 80's ~ boy have things changed. I've got an uncle in downtown Bristol, in fact he's in both Bristol, TN and Bristol, Virginia ~ weird. |

If anybody wants this little gem, I'll let it go. The town left me a note last week about a non registered car ordinance so I put a 45 day temp tag on it to keep them at bay for a little while.
It needs some vacuum lines sorted out, exhaust repair at the flex pipe and you see the body damage. Just as you see it, with the CLK wheels/tires ~ $1000 bucks Otherwise I might just stick it in storage or? |

Well, I was ready to give up on this car and nearly did [things could still change I guess]. I was so frustrated I was ready to take a sledge hammer to it. My son has been asking me to keep it for his first car so I told him I would if no one bought it after a few days and he didn't change his mind. Today, since there's been no serious buyer, I decided to take another shot at the vacuum lines and got most of it straightened out. The turbo now pulls strong and hard. The connection at the intake was full of soot but once cleaned and directly routed to the ALDA it made a 200% difference.
After school I took him for a ride to show him and sure enough, as ungrateful as this little car is, after I made a tight turn around to come back, the passenger low ball joint came apart!!!! I was less than a 1/2 mile away so we walked home, got the Land Rover, a floor jack, a couple blocks of wood, a ratchet strap and a length of chain for my initial plan of attack [versus a $100+ tow bill for a 1/2 mile]. I got the chain and a ratchet strap around the lower control arm tight enough to hold the ball joint together pretty good so I put the wheel & tire back on and made it the 1/2 mile back going slowly. I guess it will get new ball joints, lower control arm bushings, shocks and shock mounts............... |

I got the ball joints in, boy they were BAAAAAAD. Of course the one side came apart as noted and the other wasn't far from the same demise. Not a tough job [for those of us that have done it before] with a loaner ball joint press from Advance Auto Parts and some brute strength. I checked the LCA bushings and opted to leave them alone so I just used the chain around the coil spring instead of a coil spring compressor and removing the LCA's.
I didn't find a decent priced set of shocks so the old ones remain but I did change out a new set of upper shock mounts as the olds ones were worn out and broken. What a difference! It now drives/steers much better without the clunking, clanking and wandering. I still haven't got the vacuum lines all done but I'm making progress. |

Well, I sold it yesterday. It found a good new home with a Mercedes enthusiast who intends to restore it.
Thanks and enjoy your Mercedes! |

This thread should be a sticky somewhere as a cautionary tale to would-be Mercedes restorers.
