Another rock legend thread -Springsteen-
As most know I love The Clash but another jam I can never resist is Bruce Springsteen. I know and recite the lyrics to every Springsteen song pre-86 (including Nebrasksa). When I was teenage serial ski racer we practiced everyday and sang Bruce tunes on the chairlift in between runs...oh my the memories..
A true artist that has stood the test of time. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/14/bruce-springsteen-joe-strummer-glastonbury |

I agree. I like his folk stuff he did recently with the Sessions band a lot as well.

I watched a cool documentary on the Sessions and I loved his quote something along the line of "let's keep this real with some whiskey". That's bad ass IMO. He's the real deal.

I've heard nothing but bad things about him haha....although my friends lived the same town as him (and bon jovi btw) so its more "personal" than music related. I am also deeply involved in globalization literature and academia which kind of unearths the issues of Americana by nature. I always "meh'd" at him.

Clarence Clemens AKA- The Big Man - has more talent/soul in his pinky, than Bruce has in his entire body.
The East Street Band was fortunate that he agreed to join their outfit.

I guess that is why they call it a band, your negative spin always seems to permeate everything substantive on this forum. |

I had occasion to be in Matt's Saloon on Whiskey Row in Prescott AZ back in the early 80's. There was some halfassed house band playing. Springsteen and some other guy came in on motorcycles, sat at the bar and had a drink. Nobody noticed them; I wasn't much of a fan and surely didn't. Then he approached the band and offered to jam with them and all of a sudden everybody realized who he was. A less than full house got about an hour's free concert.
I'd had a similar thing happen previously at a steakhouse in Phoenix, only it was Jackson Browne who hit the bar and decided to jam.

He's the only one that will make me change the station on the radio.
Tbomachines mentioned it being a personal thing. With me it's a personal hate for three reasons. 1) On a cross country trip in 1985, three of the 5 people on the trip were huge springsteen fans. This was before mp3 players and there was only one tape player in the camper. I had nothing major against him one way or the other, but I was springsteened out. The end came when there was a discussion over who were better song writers, Springsteen or the Beatles/ Lennon/Mccartney. Oh, and the three guys hated the Beatles on top of it. Seriously? 2) I had total ****heads for roommates first semester in college, and they were huge Springsteen fans. They were violent (destroying things) and stupid loud when often drunk on top of being the stereotypical stupid jocks. This was shortly after the cross country trip, so add crappy roommates to a soundtrack of Springsteen, and I cringe. 3) Roy Orbison concert movie "Black and White Night". It would have been great if Springsteen just played as accompaniment like all the rest of the other performers listed below, but if you ever watch it, that's not what happened. He had to stick his smug mug in to upstage Roy in numerous songs. NOBODY else did that. The rest of them had respect for Roy. It was his concert, his name, and it ended up being the last performance concert released. Roy was in great form. I see that same arrogance in the story posted of the band where Bruce and his friend walked into a bar and nobody recognized them. What? Nobody recognized them and gave them allocades for walking in? They had to announce themselves and upstage the band that was there to make a buck. "Black and White Night" performers: Roy Orbison: lead vocals, guitar, harmonica Glen D. Hardin: piano James Burton: lead guitar Jerry Scheff: upright bass Ronnie Tutt: drums Jackson Browne: backing vocals T Bone Burnett: acoustic guitar; musical director Elvis Costello: acoustic guitar, electric organ, harmonica k.d. lang: backing vocals Bonnie Raitt: backing vocals J. D. Souther: backing vocals; acoustic guitar; vocal arrangements Steven Soles: backing vocals Bruce Springsteen: guitar, vocals Tom Waits: electric organ, acoustic guitar Jennifer Warnes: backing vocals Alex Acuńa: percussion Michael Utley: keyboard I would have been fine with it if he just behaved himself. Heck, I probably would have even changed my opinion. Where he tones it down to what the others do, he's fine, but he stands out like a sore thumb, on purpose.

My goodness, such hostility toward Bruce. Who would have thunk it?
I saw Bruce with the E Street Band in 1974 (plus or minus a year) at the Shady Grove in Maryland. It was a theater in the round, with a rotating stage. A friend of mine was an early Bruce fanatic. He must have been second in line when the tickets went on sale. We were within feet of the stage. It was, without a doubt, the best show I've seen. That includes all shows of every type. He's a great showman and his band was so tight. Martin Mull was the opening act. He had a guitar and might have sung a bit, but it was mostly a comedy routine. A good one, as I recall. The music Bruce produced after his first three albums is not my cup of tea, but he's an impressive guy. He is among the best at creating imagery with his music. |

X2 chillcutt just enjoying being controversial but never the less he is the one that all the time preaches about Muslim way of life etc. I don't care who he is or what he believes in, I am just happy that he have chosen to relocate himself far, far away from here. Every time he doesn't agree with something he is puling his "I am a Muslim" speech and expect everyone else to stand still....
