How to repair a scratched cedar chest
We recently moved some furniture from Ky to Ga and unfortunately the cedar chest got scratched. Can anyone provide some repair procedures for something like this? I've done some light sanding on it as you can see. The fan to the right is from Westinghouse and was made in the USA

Ugh...it looks as though you sanded against the grain. Try to clean it up going with the grain using some really fine steel wool. Then set it up so that side is horizontal, and try using some Formby's. That will liquefy the stain and varnish and let you kind of redistribute it. If that doesn't work you have lots more sanding and then restaining to do.
Good luck. |

hmmmm, thanks
I'll try it the next day or so and see what happens. After reading your post and looking at it again there are numerous other areas with issues so it may need redoing all over anyway.

Formby's is some amazing stuff. Basically it just liquefies all the stain and varnish (you apply it with fine steel wool, too, sloughing off the varnish into a pan) and then you kind of spread it around. It might work on all of it, but since you're down to bare wood there it may not. I'd start that way, if it ends up passable that is a lot less work than refinishing the whole thing.

In general you have to decide what the original finish is before you proceed.

Depending on the depth of the scratch rubbing with walnut shells sometimes helps on non varnished surfaces
