You can therefore deduce how SnapOn treats their dealers.

The warranty issue is a long-standing one. SO doesn't pay promptly for warranty returns, I'm talking 6 or even 12 months or more in some cases. That may not sound like much, for a broken #2 phillips screwdriver or two, but when they have an issue with a bad product (example: defective parts in an entire batch of air impact wrenches) the dealers get hung out to dry running around exchanging units with no payback from head office.

Perhaps it's different in Canada than the US, but here they don't offer any backup on the "financing" terms (pay by the week) the dealers routinely have to offer to enable individual mechanics, or even shops, to make large purchases.

Some shop owners are stand-up on this stuff and make sure that if a wrench is leaving, he talks to the dealer beforehand to keep a paper trail. Others... my friend who was local here lost thousands every year to mechanics who would pack up their box and disappear after they screwed up in the shop, or had words witih their boss, or whatever.

I know two people who worked their butts off to raise the money to get SO franchises. One was forced to leave it by his wife, before he burned out. The other tried to take on head office (on the warranty issue, actually) by refusing to remit until they kept up their end of the franchise agreement... and ended up with his territory pulled out from under him.

By the way, both of these guys are HUGE supporters of Craftsman products... and for the Canucks out there, the high-end Cdn Tire MasterCraft as well.

Ok Atlas called the John Deere sign first, but if he doesn't take it, I could be interested.

Lots of juicy stuff there but the shipping to Canada would be prohibitive....

Is there a figure on the dollar that he's aiming for here, or is the pricing more random?

Turning wrenches is a hobby for me, so I haven't had to deal with those issues, but my Snap On guy is nothing like that. I have a story that will let you know how service-oriented he is. I was working on a court case that involved a Ducati motorcycle. The other side had an expert who was going to talk about how fast the bike would go in each gear. My Snap On guy races Ducatis, so I called and asked him what he thought. He got a hold of a bike just like the one involved in my case, ran some tests, and gave me a report. It made the issue go away. And I'm a customer who probably averages about $60 a year in Snap On purchases. That's pretty good service, if you ask me.

EDIT: I just got back from buying a single no. 50 torx bit from the Snap On guy. Based on what I paid for that, I probably need to double my previous estimate of $60 per year. Even so, he's not getting rich off of me.

ive had nothing but good luck with matco tools and the company itself. 90% of my tools are matco, with the other 8% being craftsman and a couple pieces of snap on becuase i needed that tool NOW.
I have a Matco wrench and a set of Matco pullers, both are excellent quality.

that lot has been sold as one big lump. In my opinion it would have been better and more money would have been made if it was not sold as a lump.

he has more.
