can someone please tell me what I did to this guy?

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/wheels-tires/312614-gospel-detemining-proper-tire-pressure.html#post2881658

Is there something in my post that should elicit his venom?

Hoo boy . . . you're in right place to ask about what makes people go off in forums. Grab a drink and get comfy!

Will,

It's been my experience that it is sometimes difficult to communicate adequately on a web forum. You can't see the other persons face or hear the inflection in their voice. He may have taken offense by reading only one portion of your post, or he might have been laughing all the time he was writing it meaning it as a joke.

If there's anyone on this forum who has experienced miscommunication here, it's me. In my case I try to keep in mind that it takes two to communicate and take most of the blame myself.

Don't let it get to you. Best of luck!

Not sure... maybe try asking his preference on Motor Oil or running WVO...

I saw nothing in your post to get hyped about, seemed like a reasonable batch of questions.

Unfortunately, some people have their hot buttons which cause immediate loss of composure.

Tires appear to be a trigger for him. Guess you can't ask questions, anything other than what the factory recommends MUST NOT BE DISCUSSED.

Seems like a stupid thing for him to flip out over if you ask me, people posting on an MB car forum would most likely be airing up their tires however, factory, or 33, or 35, or whatever the tire says. IMO safe is a broad spectrum, not just a narrow line of EXACT adherence. If im gonna be worried about tires, im gonna worry about 100 PSI bald truck tires on trailers waiting to blow out my windows as I pass, and throw the truck out of control.

I say let it go, just ignore him or send a private email to a moderator asking their opinion and to edit the thread. In two posts he is accusing you of slander, anyone who reads it as an outsider can see its just a weird attack.

You start yelling back, then both of you become guilty.

Yeah. One reads posts like this, and starts to have visions of "the anal retentive chef" and "participation trophies." IDK....maybe it's just me

Maybe he stopped taking his meds or something. Who knows.

My current 211 wagon has tire pressure values listed for normal use, maximum load use, and above 100MPH use. So it would seem that Mercedes themselves think there is a range of appropriate values, depending upon what/where/how the vehicle is used. So it seems Mercedes agrees with you; there is no one correct number.

When I click on the URL - my screen blinks intermittently and won't hold as I scroll down.

It would appear you had a conversation with someone on the tech forum here - best I can tell.

Partly out of interest and partly out of the desire to stir things up , couldn't "appropriate" pressures depend on the tire manufacturer (based on proprietary compounds, designs, changes in technology since 1980 in my case, etc.)?

For example, the Pirelli on my previously never-on-the-pavement spare tire recommends 36 PSI while the Mastercrafts that the PO put on recommend 44 PSI (Max). If the Mercedes engineers base their pressure recommendations on the tires that came on the vehicle as standard equipment (I'm assuming the Pirelli's were), couldn't that change if tires from another manufacturer (Mastercrafts) are installed? I'm guessing that the tire manufacturers' pressures are based on some engineers' recommendations.

Is it the Mercedes recommended PSI no matter what or do we assume the tire guys know something about how their tires perform and wear based on their numbers? As a seed and fertilizer guy (meaning I know jack squat about tires and PSI), I would guess the latter. I've always run with the pressures set in the range on the tires and have always gotten even wear and about the expected longevity.

That's one of the variables I listed in the original thread. As technology changes, so do tire pressures. Today's tires aren't made of the same compound, same material of belts, and same ply as they were 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years ago. Look at the tire recommendation, the vehicle recommendation, check with the tire dealer to see if the tire is really a match, then start with the tire recommendation manufacturer's rating, and adjust from there, if needed.

Looks like this might have a chance to become an oil type thread after all. Maybe tire thread is the new oil thread.

In the last ten years ago MANY tires have seen increase MAXIMUM inflation pressures as seen on the sidewalls. This is MAX pressure and does not significantly change the required pressure settings.

Agreed.

Most tire manufacturers have a chart that lists what tires are good for certain cars, as well as the needed tire pressure...you can either find it online or call the manufacturer to find out.
