A neighbor is head of security for the electric utility that serves most of my state. They have a number of nuke plants in their portfolio. I bumped into him a couple of months after 9/11 and he told me he had been up all night trying to get information about choppers over one of his nuke plants. He called local then state and then federal authorities and ended up talking to someone at The Pentagon. They denied there were choppers there.

"But my security team saw 4 military choppers hovering over the site, lighting it up and inspecting it at 3 AM."

"No they didn't. Go back to sleep, Sir."

The choppers fly around in circles late at night over the neighborhoods and shine spotlights down on who they think are drug dillers outside.

I personally saw them doing it once in South of Sacramento town whe I cam there at midnight from LA dropping off an old w123 Mercedes we'd picked up in LA to a mechanic's house in that town..

Things were really annoying.

One of these days someone is gonna shine one of those red laser pointer pen things back up at them at midnight: "Say buh bye" pigs!

Back in the 70's I left a friends house at 2 am and a City of Dallas Police helo followed me for 18 miles. It was so low at times I could read the words on the bottom of it. It stopped once and lit up a car wreck but then it caught up with me later.

A friend of mine that serviced their machine asked them if they ever just followed people at random and they told him when nothing was going on they would follow someone just for training reasons. They had to be airborne anyway.

I think they stopped this about 20 years ago due to the price of fuel.

Always has been. Two decades ago Venice Beach was one of the most dangerous places in LA. Friends would warn me not to pass Rose Ave, the street that separates Santa Monica and Venice. A cab would not bring you to some areas in Venice at night.

These days it's much better. It's a mix of old Venice, professionals, artists, surfer dudes, families, ghetto and the rich that moved in the last decade or so. In the weekends you can see just as many high end cars on Abbot Kinney as on Rodeo Drive, but still with the occasional shooting at the Whole Foods parking lot. When you get closer to the beach it can get pretty hairy when the sun go's down, lots of homeless kids and loonies.

Small price to pay for living at the beach.
