Here, in Harford County, MD we have the Aberdeen Proving Ground as well as the Edgewood Arsenal. US Rte 40 connects the two. Some years ago M1 tanks would run up and down US40, generally with their turrets facing to the rear. I happened upon one of these, and running down the road at about 50 mph. The thought of tailgating never occurred to me. I gave it plenty of room.

With an M1 you just have to slam on the brakes. The back end goes up in the air a bit and whoever is following you gets crushed when it comes down.

It looked like the white car was trying to pass and the black car was weaving.

What's the movie in which Robert de Niro(?) is out in a 6.9 and pushes along someone just passed him?

Hahahahaha, hilarious!

Just when I thought that tapping the brakes repeatedly would work to give them a warning...

I've had that sentiment many times, but always when I was stuck behind someone. Seriously, if you're getting tailgated, it's probably because you're doing something wrong. Use the right lane for going slow, don't block the left, and respect the fact that there are people on the road who want to drive faster than you.

Yeah I guess the other day I was doing something wrong when I had a Honda 6in from my rear bumper on a residential street...with a 25mph limit...and I was doing oh 40-42ish.

Way to slow it seems.

So I slammed on my brakes and stopped and let him pass me. Sadly he did not get to buy me a new rear bumper.

On one road in the marsh I tried an experiment once. I think some people are just programmed to lock onto you about a foot away. I had a car on my bumper and I wanted to see how fast I would have to go to satisfy them. I was doing 45 in a 40 and speed up, at about 65 they had an oh crap moment and backed off. Than I pulled over and let them pass, and they wouldn't go over 40.

I think some people never look at their speedo, they just lock onto the car in front of them. Once their in the lead they don't know what to do, see it on the highway all the time.

I wish there was a switch I could install on both my diesels, to make them belch a nice cloud of black soot and smoke out the tailpipe on command - I've found that to be an excellent anti-tailgating device. When I have hit on the right conditions and was able to make either diesel belch a respectable cloud of smoke in a tailgater's windshield, it seems to freak most drivers out, and I've had some of them come to almost a dead stop.

It's like they expect black smoke out of a large truck or Cummins/Powerstroke/Duramax pickup - but it surprises the hell out of them when a supposedly "normal" sedan or Jeep Liberty does it.

You do, it's called the kick-down switch

Works best with Mazda Miata tailgaters who have the roof down

Its also called over fueling.
Some of my friends over on the Oilburners.net website love to rig their diesels for this effect. The problem is that it attracts too much of the wrong attention, and cause people to lash out at all diesels, thinking them all to be dirty.
OTOH, I did enjoy smoking an obnoxious BMW convertible owner, ( that was probably a redundant description) one day many years ago.

Living up a canyon in Colorado, one of the worst things to encounter were the bike riders 2 and 3 wide riding up the hill.
Used to shift my old GMC diesel duelly into overdrive, bog the heck out of it, then, just when passing said idiots, clutch in and throttle down Nice big cloud o' smoke, and the exhaust exited to the right too.

Nowadays with tailgaters I just pull aside and let them go. Helps clear out the coppers ahead of you.
