That's my new policy.

Tailgaters especially on the highway are a valuable resource!

Get them to past you and scream ahead. This way you can pace them at a high rate of speed just far enough back so the cops nail them.

I call them rabbits on the highway, always try to get one to run out ahead, preferable in a nice radar target like a red BMW.

OTOH, I did enjoy smoking an obnoxious BMW convertible owner, ( that was probably a redundant description) one day many years ago.
That's the problem - I have both mine tuned well enough, and give them enough of a regular workout, that it's rare to have very much black smoke, if any, out the back end even on WOT takeoff.

OTOH, back in '06 when I acquired the first 87 300D, the PO had only put 130K miles on it in 18 years, and apparently it was mostly in-town driving - I doubt the car had even seen an Italian tuneup it's entire life.

About a week later, I drove it into work for the first time. Halfway there, a gent in a brand new powder blue 06 Mustang started making love to my rear bumper, to the point he even blew thru 2 stop signs to stay glued to my rear. After he rolled thru the second stop, I decided I'd had enough of this crap. Just after I felt the beast shift into second, I buried the skinny pedal and for the first time, activated the kickdown switch...

18 years worth of soot came blasting out of those twin tailpipes, to the point that my entire rear windshield was filled by the cloud and I completely lost sight of his car for a few seconds - it was a display that would have done a Cummins heavily modded for drag racing proud.

When I regained sight of his car, I realized two things - one, he'd come to a complete stop - and two, he'd had ALL his windows down.

For the last 6 miles into work, that guy stayed at least a good 1/8 mile away from me. Turns out he was one of the supervisors in the area of the plant I was inspecting in, and during one break heard him *****ing to his friends about how some a$$hat in a diesel MB had blown black soot all over his Mustang as I was walking by. Of course he didn't bother to inform them of HIS part in this little drama.

Who do you think is at fault in this situation?

Taken at the 5-North freeway in Anaheim, on the way back home from work.

Guess that depends on how fast they are going... It is incumbent upon drivers to maintain appropriate speed just as it is to maintain a safe following distance.

Many people are oblivious to the fact that they are stupid and dangerous. That is one of the things that makes them dangerous.

Some people think everyone else is stupid and dangerous and that makes them dangerous.

Many people have power issues and don't have much say about anything in their lives so when they get behind the wheel they want to control others and tailgating happens.

A lot of monkey see, monkey do. Monkeys don't belong behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Land developers and their lobbyists have turned our hiways into parking lots for their cheesy shopping centers and malls to sell cheap crap made overseas and avoid paying taxes. They are probably more to blame than anyone.

If you think human sacrifice is not routinely practiced in the US today think about the tens of thousands of traffic related deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries. Watch your back, nobody else is.

If your first priority while driving is not to get everyone home safe, you are a dangerous waste of human existence.

Don't forget that you are on camera hundreds of times a day. Many cameras are installed to identify vehicles and drivers. If you think you have an expectation of privacy while in your vehicle and your identification is not known, think again. I would willingly have cameras and a "flight recorder" in my vehicles that could be remotely monitored. The technology exists.

It was at low speed (20-30mph), the guy in front had a big space but there was nowhere to go due to traffic congestion. Guy at the back kept swerving left and right trying to get the one in front to move over or let him pass. But guy in front was just cruising along going with traffic flow - again, due to congestion.

I only stay in the left lane when I need to pass or the traffic on that lane is faster than other lanes. Or switch back over to the right to pass when somebody is slow on the left lane and does not want to move over (cell phone, make up, etc), then retun to the left lane if needed or maintain speed in 2nd lane.

If it is a problem it's gotten worse with all the hybrids and hypermilers out there. In a hilly area, cruise control'ers and momentum conservationists don't mix. I like a steady 65 mph which doesn't play well with drivers who slow to 45 or less at the top of a hill then build speed downhill. Do that if you must but move over for those who can continue to drive safely at the limit.

I disagree. Plenty of times on a four-lane road I'll be in the right lane, usually towing something or will a load of lumber in the van and someone will pull behind me and honk even though there is a completely empty lane to the left of me that they can use.

Usually it's someone quite young who apparently has nothing better to do.

Until 31 DEC 2016, they will be ale to do that, but not afterwards

I've been wondering if I should mount the tow ball on the back of the G to help in getting people to back off when i'm doing a hill start.

I think that the prevalence of the automatic transmission in North America increases the tendency to tailgate.
