Muslim extremists in action in the Maldives. How can we talk about this without calling Muslims extremists violent? How can we say that the extremists are not really Muslim? What are your thoughts?

The issue comes in when people start painting all Muslims with the same brush, or implying they are all as "extreme" as some nutjobs.

Additionally, it's a problem when you CAN'T acknowledge the terrorists that ARE Muslim. This is what is preventing a more rational screening at the airports.

It's a problem when all Muslims are said to be terrorists and it's also a problem when people refuse to admit that a very tiny percent of Muslims ARE terrorists.

The vast majority of Muslims I've known, and having spent 20 years in the software industry I've known a LOT, have been honest, hardworking, smart people who I know I can trust.

That's an issue for sure, but when the majority of people seem to condone "extremism" then it's no longer extreme now is it? It's now normal - just as it was normal for Germans to hate jews in the later 30's.

Who is smashing stores because the stores seem to violate some religious tenant? Extremists or mainstream Maldivian Muslims? In the Maldives normal is extreme for other parts of the world- so now most Maldivian Muslims are approving of the violent actions.

Spin, what spin? I am now wholly convinced and on board. Sign me up. All Muslims are extremists. There can be no doubt. None. If you are a Mohammedan, it's only a matter of time before you will be sucked into the dark matter of violent extremism, in much the same way that more and more Christians are allowing their children to handle live rattlesnakes to see if god loves them.

I was reading the other day about religious terrorists taking up arms against their government. Can't recall if they were Muslim or not. They had a look out named Revere or something like that.

You can see them get riled up when someone insults or does something they perceive as an insult to the religion. As such you can conclude they don't live in a cave. OTOH, it is much harder to see instances where someone does something in the name of their religion that supposedly goes against the grain AND there are massive protests that the religion is being sullied by those few. Tacit support is also support. Govt statements don't count. Lets just say I'd be a lot more convinced of their not condoning such activity if they had the same level of protests about what Al Qaeda is doing. Yes, I heard all the excuses about what they are afraid of, etc, etc

As far as catholics go, it is endorsed by the pope. Both past and present so it is ok as far as the religion goes. He is the leader of the RC church, is he not? He did the catholic shuffle of the Cardinal and the new pope didn't undo the past action so there we have it.

Given the substantial number of Muslims in this world, I would greatly prefer to attribute this violence to Muslim extremists than Muslim centrists, wouldn't you?

So flogging women for extramarital sex and no open practice of anything but Islam is normal in the Maldives. It's a societal norm to them. If you take those folks where that's a societal norm and transport them to a different society they are then extreme.

What you call the flogging of women for extramarital sex? Normal or extreme? For the western world it's labelled extreme and I'm wondering how people can spin it so that you can then not call it extreme. It appears you (elchivito and others) cannot call it extreme because it would validate the stupidity of the action and make Muslims look bad and you don't want that to happen. Instead you try to make fun of the question- how childish.
