I actually almost bought a bike where the VIN on the title had a G and the bike's VIN had a 6 in the same position.

Last November, I bought a car in AZ for my daughter.

PO kept his plates, so I went online to AZ DMV and printed off a 3 day window sticker for a buck.

Insurance is a no brainer. Companies will give you X number of days if the car is a replacement for a vehicle currently insured. All my new purchases are replacement vehicles (eventually).

Last time I did this with a friend he got insurance on it and I slapped the plates from my black 300SD on his black S320.

Figured if a cop ran it, whats the difference a black S class is a black S class.

Never had an issue. People run coke and guns all the time and never get pulled over, just don't stand out and give them a reason.

If the PO doesn't let us use his existing plates. We'll probably get insurance on it and then use another set of Mercedes plates.

I routinely smuggle Coca-Cola and BB guns all over town in my SD. Cops never look twice.

Ok so heres the question now:

Friday we're going to call the insurance and have them insure the car for the return trip.
Saturday go up buy and return.

Does the previous owners insurance drop the car when the title is changed hands?

That is to say, should an accident occur, who's insurance get hit?

Interesting question....

All I know for sure is which insurance card I would be handing over if something were to happen....

Of course, if the car is not registered, most likely neither insurance would pony up. Pretty sure that legal registration is a requirement for the insurance company to pay damages.

So, if you are on his plates, then his insurance would be left holding the bag.

Well.

We spoke with the insurance company and they said that all they'd want to insure the car is the VIN number, once the title was signed over it would be our insurance covering it. The PO would then call his company and drop coverage.

At least that's how I understand it.

Notify your insurance co and have them issue you an ID with the VIN of the new car on it.
I have bought over a dozen cars this way and been stopped more than once - all you need is the title signed over to you, a bill of sale signed by you and the seller and your proof of insurance.
You can run legally on title and bill of sale as long as the dates are current.

Sounds like you've covered the bases.

My only experience comes from working at my brothers body shop and seeing insurance companies deny coverage to people who had been running their cars with expired or fictitious plates.
