Spitting is disgusting and should incur a penalty but coughing and sneezing are uncontrollable human reflexes- well sneezing. Smoking is voluntary and unecessary as well as detrimental to others.

I believe that most people have a pet peeve about smokers that believe that cigarette butts are not only biodegradable (filters not so much) but also constitute nutrient rich mulch and an attractive alternative to pristine beach sand or grass medians.

In my youth I was addicted to both. In my early 30s I slowed my THC consumption because it is illegal. I eventually kicked the habit completely. Nicotine was much tougher. I had to have a heart attack to figure out the time to kick the habit had arrived. That was in my early 50s. |

Prop 29 in CA will increase taxes on tobacco (not sure about chaw) and thus increase the funding for more ads and education about the dangers related to smoking.
Of course the past campaigns have gotten CA to about the 10% mark, which is really amazing...and a good thing, too. Regarding more-restrictive laws, as an asthma sufferer, I generally welcome anything that limits my involuntary exposure to unnecessary pollutants. Viewed from a global perspective, I have to think that smoking tobacco has a negative effect on both air pollution and carbon emissions, particularly when you consider it from cradle to grave (both for smokers and tobacco). Tilling, planting, harvesting, processing, shipping, burning...there's a lot there, particularly considering it's a product that has no real benefits. But the tobacco lobby has lots of power in the legislatures, so those are considerations best left...unconsidered. I don't often see people who smoke. And for the greenies who tend to populate certain areas of the golden state and smoke, I wonder if they'd appreciate the irony of increasing global warming...while shortening their life and exercising their individual rights to pollute not just the air I breathe, but the planet. Probably not.

I think anyone can see alcohol is the worst drug of all. I've just never known very many potheads who go home after a binge and beat the crap out of their old lady, or take out a van load of kids. Meth and crack may cause the same types of behavior, but your average speed freak only lives a few years after being hooked, with alcohol it goes on for years and years. We need to get all the alcoholics hooked on smack, and then make alcohol illegal and give smack away for free.

Collectively, alcohol is the worst drug. It ruins too many lives as an alcoholic can affect a lot of people around him/her, or kill somebody due to drunk driving. And too many of drunks and it is legal !! Individually, crack, meth, heroin is the worst. Smoking probably is something in between.

Addiction is definitely on topic. Scientifically, nicotine is the most addictive drug known to man. Even heroin addicts don't need a fix every twenty minutes.
Speaking of heroin addicts, heroin is socially not that bad a drug when it is legal and easy to get, heroin addicts are docile little muffins when they don't have to steal. They can even drive much better than drunks can. |
