I JUST avoided an accident!!! SOOO Close!

I was making a left at a turn light intersection, the car to my right also making a left (two left turn lanes) was just SLIGHTLY faster than me through the intersection, and the car coming through the intersection from the left BARRELLED through the red light, and I hit my brakes in time, the car to my right was not so lucky...

of course, my big suburban likely shielded her from seeing the car approaching, and likely contributed to the wreck...

SCARY big mess...

I pulled over, and waited for the cops to explain everything that happened...

wow.

yeah, both parties appeared to be fine.
the lady that got hit had a fist sized burn on her shirt from the airbag, the girl that drove the at fault car, seemed dazed, but undamaged.

the lady that got hit, was VERY dazed from the accident, and was clutching her arm as the medics checked her out.

Nope it's real. From Russia. It was a Nissan PU with a topper... that's where all the pieces came from.

Glad you saw what was coming and you trusted your feelings...

I had that happen a few years back...

I was approaching an intersection, in the left lane of a north-bound two-laner, the oncoming south-bound car was in the left-turn-only lane...just starting to "inch out" like he was deciding if he had enough time to cut across in front of me or not...

Something in the back of my head said "This guy is going to try it!" so I took my foot off the gas and was ready to mash the brakes if I had to.

However, the car that was on my right-rear corner bumper didn't see the numbnutz ahead of us and he just kept a-commin'...

Yep, you guessed it...on-coming numbnutz ALSO didn't see the guy behind and to the right of me and sure as the sun sets in the west, Numbnutz decides that heading east, across and in front of what he thinks is only one north-bounder isn't anything...

*POW!*

The new Eastener gets smacked in the passenger door by a 35mph North-bound right-laner and ends up watching the sun set in the west 'cause he's now parked 180° from where he thought he should be going...

The wife and kid are going ape-squirts 'cause they can't believe were not in the middle of it all and I'm sitting in a highly-digested-pile-of-fiber (not really) 'cause I just can't believe I didn't get into the middle of it too.

Nobody got hurt, but both cars were totaled...if I remember correctly, the dingus was driving a Cavalier and the North-bounder was driving a Saab...

I gave a statement to the cops and then was on my way. Don't know what happened to the other folks, but I'm sure the dumb@55 the cut across the lanes was the guilty one.

Trust your feelings and stay paranoid...

I am amazed that people believe that a vehicle can protect you in a crash. The only protection is avoidance. Even if you walk away the damage can show up years later. Same goes for trauma from many sources in our industrialized world.

When crossing an intersection, would you prefer to be the pedestrian struck by a vehicle going 25 mph or in a vehicle being struck by the same car going the same speed?

If I remember correctly, the average person would be hit around knee level by the front of the vehicle, then carried onto the hood, with a head strike on the windshield at least midway (4') up the glass.

I question if perhaps you have personally tested this scenario?
