I never drove one with the drivers window all the way up. These cars can kill you. Window lowered a little kept you more in touch with your surroundings in my opinion.

I had a 930 and heard all the rear engine stories of fear and death. What a joke. Anybody that wrecks in a 911/930 would wreck in a Corvette or any other car. The 930 UNDERSTEERS like crazy, but you can make it oversteer. It is NOT uncontrollable and not a death trap. It is also not expensive to maintain. I tracked mine and that caused some wear issues, but a street 911 is cheaper than my 6.3 and 6.9 were.

The stories of lag are true but exaggerated. A Honda 2000 has the same problem in that unless you are at 8000RPM or above you are out of the powerband and basically driving a Miata. A 930 starts to come on boost at 3000RPM and pulls like crazy after that. Now if you mashed the throttle while turning and the boost kicked in, you might be in for a surprise. All you have to do is keep you foot in the gas and you won't come off boost.

Not sure if the 930 or Corvair has the most bogus stories told about it....

If you do get a 930, a 5 speed gearbox is preferred (1989). If I bought another one i would install a 915 box from a regular 911. Everybody says the 915 can't handle turbo power, but I have one in a 400HP 914 with a Chevy 327. On the street the 930 4 speed is fine, on the track you are always looking for gear 2.5.

I didn't sell all my cars for it, but I just bought this one-owner 1969 911S Targa about three weeks ago. Very fun to drive, and very different from all the Mercedes I've ever owned. I love the car.

Very nice. And I'd be the last one to advise against such a purchase. But air-cooled cars require frequent oil changes, particularly Porches, and I've read on this forum that removing the filter is well-nigh impossible without puncturing it with a screwdriver and................the bar.................

I have always loved the looks of the early porsche 911s with mild fender flares.

I like functionality of the targa but have never really warmed to the large stainless bands on the roll bar.

I'd love to have a chance to run a 930 where I could explore its handling at the limit. Like my Miata which I love to autocross but avoided exploring the limits on the street because of its slight unpredictability at the limit. Getting a car with slightly unpredictable handling sideways or backwards on the street would not be something I would want to do.

As stated earlier I am attracted to the simplicity of the 930 coupled with its supercar performance. I'd want one with crank windows!

If you hang the rear bumper of the car on the porche, that relieves the tension on the bar so it can be safely moved into an unoffending position for filter removal
