Is this the Bertone styled Volvo?
No- I don't think so. That was a coupe from the earlier series.

Two coupes. 262c and 780. Only buy something with a turbo-4, avoid the French V-6 like the Antichrist. Then again, most French V-6's won't have survived till today, so this may be a moot issue.

And relatively fast if a B230FT or V-8 are dropped in, and suspension is upgraded (poly bushings, sways, cheap stuff).

Here are mine two Bertone's, 780 turbo. The silver Bertone has the full IPD suspension upgrade, strut braces, thicker sway-bars and poly bushings.

My 240 wagon broke down on me one time in the 10 years I drove it. I pulled into my driveway after a long trip and the timing belt broke. One new timing belt and two hours later I was back on the road.

Also VERY safe, VERY hard to kill, comfortable, slow, boring looking, spacious, long lasting and iconic.

Our friend John took my wife and I from England to Paris France in his little Nissan wagon and we saw his daughter's 240 wagon parked on the sidewalk outside the French hospital ( whatever it was called) where Princess Di had been taken after the w140 Mercedes crash in which she perished. She (Johns daughter) had worked as a nurse in that hospital.

The wagon had a big dent in the right front door and the fender. John told us that a Porsche 911 had run a red light there in Paris, and the 911 pretty much bounced off the Volvo. They can really take a hit. But the 911 didn't do well at all though.

The thing that was cool, was that the car waited until I pulled into my driveway before the timing belt went. Sometimes I wonder if that old 240 wagon had a Heart.

850 = Junkbox

The 850 was know for many "issues"

1) AC Evaporator was Aluminum/Plastic JUNK and replacement was harder than on a 320E! Minimum 12 hours labor!
2) Engine Mounts and Upper Strut Bearing wear out in short time. Replacement of the Upper Strut is easy but Engine Mounts are $$$
3) Transmissions-850 AutoBox is known as AW-50 and is a POS! Made by Toyota and undersized. Do a Power Launch and it can Grenade.
4) Struts-Front end eats 'em. Rears are so so.
5) Crash Safety-It AIN'T a 240! Occupant Death Rates are MUCH Higher than 740/940//240 series. Wagons have been known to bend right behind the drivers seat in a head on collision, compromising the "Safety Cage" design.
6) Early version of White Block in line 5 cyl motor copied from AUDI design. Issues with Main Bearings and Cooling Passages. Similar issues to 960 Twin Cam 6. Bad Castings led to "porious block" syndrome and failure of cooling system integrity. Parts are not cheap
