Wonder if cannine urine would drive them away? If you did not own a dog perhaps a neighbour would let his mark your garden area.

There are repelant sents out there but do not always work. The deer are locating your plants by their odours I imagine.

Homemade deer repellent
After using a commercial deer repellent, I decided to make my own. This concoction keeps deer from feeding on my gardens better than anything else I’ve tried and is less expensive than commercial brands. The ingredients are:

4 tablespoons ground cayenne pepper
1 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup peeled garlic
1 cup clear ammonia
1 cup Murphy’s oil soap
1 bar Ivory hand soap (optional)

Boil the cayenne in the vinegar for one minute, then strain it through a coffee filter. In a blender, purée the garlic in two cups of water, then strain that mixture through another filter.

Combine the two filtered liquids with the ammonia and oil soap in a 3-gallon garden sprayer. Fill the sprayer to the maximum level with water, and spray this concoction around all of the areas you want to protect. For extra stickiness, float a bar of Ivory soap in the sprayer and let it slowly dissolve over several fillings.

For maximum effectiveness, I reapply weekly, as well as immediately after every rainstorm. More frequent spraying may be warranted if deer browsing is intense.

Yeah, it's pointless to try to grow anything in Florida ( I think where you live) from now until late August. Too many bugs and mold.

We have had a successful garden for years, but have had a deer take notice. I hope she forgets us in a few months.

Damn-sorry to hear that, J. Mother Nature can be a b!tch, sometimes. Were the buckets up near your house? I know semi-domesticated (read fed regularly) deer aren't particularly skittish around houses at night, they'd still probably prefer some distance. Would motion detector lights help?

Organic gardening is definitely more work. Even though I sell chemicals for use on vegetables (and am comfortable with their use if used according to the label), I don't spray because I'm too lazy to mix up a tank and then clean it out after. Neem Oil is a pretty decent organic option for broad spectrum insect, mite and disease control.

Check with your local Agricultural Extension Service for tips on successfully growing in your particular area, they'll have regional-specific information such as what diseases and pest are most common on what plants and cultural practices to alleviate or lessen the pressure. Although the deer are another issue all together, I'd give the recipe el chivito posted a shot. Most of them have pretty extensive websites as well. The CT one has been a great resource for us when we receive oddball questions from customers.

If you're going to rig up a solar system for an electric deer fence, you might want to consider rigging up a fan to keep air moving around the plants. With the combination of heat and humidity you're dealing with in the summer months, air movement can go a long way.
