This whole thing started as a whim. a little project to try and keep me out of trouble... It has since spread....

This was fine for about a week.... Then...I decided. Why not more plants?
More plants meant more buckets... More ground...more lifting,

This project was not without it's troubles however... One night Several of my plants had an attempt on their life.... the assassins were a pack of deer that roam the neighborhood. Idiot neighbors feed them encouraging this crap...

Sadly, This cucumber plant despite a valiant effort on my part, did not survive as I had hoped....



They also Decimated my strawberry plants....





I have ordered and gotten some things to deter the 4 legged menace, soon it will be installed. I bought the solar panel kit from harbor freight after a very good friend of mine had good luck with it, several deep cycle battery's were given to me by another friend who took them out of his motor home per his maintenance schedule and I got my hands on a Electric fence Charger ( you can see where this is going I hope )

Still, Not very deterred by the attack on my hard efforts, I was rewarded slightly.


This was Technically the second fruit to come from the strawberry plants. the first one never did make it to the front of a camera... But talk about sweet strawberries! these are a Sequoia variety

About a Week later give or take a few days. I took this update. This was possibly in late March or very early April












If there is interest, I will continue on with this thread from April to current.

I have planted, Several types of tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, Sweet corn, Pumpkins, Water melons, Cantaloupes and a couple others that escape my memory at the moment

I have seen them and read on them. these were handy and pretty cheap at the time when I started this. I plan on playing with the global buckets ( a few of them) next year. All Total as it sits I have Under 50.00 in everything and have gotten several tomatoes, strawberries back already and by mid summer that should re-pay itself and keep going.

I can understand this system in an urban setting, but in a suburban area, what advantage is there besides easier predator control? Perfect soil control comes to mind. It would be hard to manage here, pots dry out way too quickly.

you can have better pest control, Soil management across several plants can be individually controlled and optimized individually for each plant instead of a broad adjustment, With the advent of technology you can install a automatic watering system.. I'm designing one for my setup this year, with a moisture probe and a control valve. not totally sure how I want to do it quite yet.. also you have better weed control. I've not used any insecticides or herbicides in this project yet either. and I have no plans to. the containers were so I diddnt have to keep bending down and over and around (I have a LOT of back problems) and it just worked out. it's a bit easier on me... another thought is, you can move them around to get the best amount of sunlight, rain etc too. There is a lot of advantages to doing it this way, I'll be covering other methods next year

There is also some resource conservation with proper management. For instance, if you set up a drip irrigation system, you virtually eliminate run off or overwatering; same for plant feeding and soil enrichment.

where are you getting your buckets for cheap?

Walmart had them for .99 when I started early, some also came from a local nursery that has been very kind to me over the years especially when I did lawn care

awesome, I would get some from Publix bakery or the deli.

Firehouse subs sells their pickle buckets for dirt cheap, $2 donation compared
to I think $5 for a bucket from Lowes

huh, I'll check those places out. We have a publix and a firehouse subs just up the road not far. I can always use more buckets. Thanks!

I do not forsee any further updates. Judging by what I saw tonight... I'm done... the deer have won... I dont know what is left if anyting is left outside right now... I'm greatly disappointed.... the deer have plenty to eat here. the Idiot neighbors feed them. they have grass and other stuff to eat.. yet they eat my stuff... the stuff I put time and effort into... I'll know by morning what is salvageable... I'm just disappointed right now....

A person I know uses Earth Boxes to grow some of that goofy hemp stuff you shouldn't smoke.
