I was in the path of totality of an eclipse in ‘81 approx, as it passed through southwestern WA state. I was living in Seattle at the time, I drove down to Olympia around 8 am and picked up my father - we drove about 80 miles south to be closer to the center of the path, which yields darkness for about 2 minutes. Olympia was on the edge of the path and was only going to get it for about 40 seconds.

It was cloudy, not sure if we’d get to see it, I left two pairs of my home-made mylar glasses with my mother in Olympia and had two with me. The clouds didn’t break where my Dad and I stopped to watch but the change from light to dark was something to remember. None of this gradual sunset stuff, it was like turning a light off in a room. We were near a farm and the animals were sounding nervous. The reverse took place at the end, light returned suddenly.

On the way home, the clouds broke and I could see about a quarter of the sun shining. I was surprised at how bright it was with only that much showing. I heard about the eclipse today but I knew that if we in the Bay area were in the path I’d have heard about it. The path of annularity is about twice as wide as the path of totality - 200 vs. 400 miles wide.

I'd like to someday do the jet-set thing and attend a total eclipse close to the equator. They can last 5 minutes in those parts I understand.

This was with eclipse glasses over my 90mm f/2.5 lens. I wish I had gotten a longer lens. We had about five minutes of ring eclipse in Albuquerque.

Beautiful. Very nice capture.

Here in southern CA we only got a partial eclipse. Not even the full moon was inside the sun.

I'm sure it was cool to see but for my money, the one to catch is a total eclipse. You can look at that ring of fire (I forget what they call it) with the naked eye.
