I went through a bunch of viruses. No telling how they were contracted. Got tired & took it to a shop. Paid money, 2 days later had the same problem. Went to bleeping computer & they walked me through.

Hard drives are cheap if that is what is wrong. The local shop will build a machine with better parts for only slightly more than a factory made.

I dislike having to buy all new programs when MS changes the OS. Will try to let XP be the last. Unfortunately, a couple of my business sites require IE so I'll need at least 1 system with it. A few programs are not written for Linux. TurboTax is 1 example - I switched to TaxAct on XP because TTax is so bloated.

Computers are a PITA but having web info is nice.

I've not had a virus in.... years now I think. I dont download Email anymore except to my phone, I dont download any programs from odd sources... I would think a failing HDD would cause the computer to hang, programs to crap out and error out. also if a certain percentage of the HDD is bad, the computer will tell you. hey your HDD is going bad, back up yer crap and contact support.... I cant see this computer having a bad one. or a virus for that matter...

oh dear . . .

Nick Burns is a classic SNL Jimmy Fallon character

Peggy . . . she does customer support for USA Prime Credit. Don't let her transfer your call to a supervisor.

Get an external enclosure. I don't really understand what you mean by "HP doesn't support it but accepts the drive and cable". If it didn't come with it stock, why should they be on the hook to provide you with an extra cable? I mean in the interest of making their customers happy they should, but by principle I don't see why.

Newegg.com - Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure - Model NST-210S2-BK

(depending on what kind of connector and what size your HD is, that may vary, but its an example of what I mean).

thanks for the link , the 'hp dosnt support it' was what the twerp tried to tell me... but HP had made this computer to accept a second drive and even has a connector on the board for it.... but they dont 'support' the second drive. but amazingly 2 hours later they found a drive cradle and possibly the cable.but I'll have to buy it.... Weehoo... yet i ordered the said cable to work with my DV7 from them just a few months ago. I told them I run dual HDD's and I need the computer to support it... they said find and was peachy until I sent the old computer back... then a couple weeks past I get nothing then I get a box with ribbon cable I dont have any use for... now they are again Dicking around with this.... *sigh* I swear I'm getting a freakin dell when I replace this unit.... on the up side. I did put a SSD drive in this computer and am delighted with the speeds it runs at
