Thought I'd post an update. the computer despite going back several times to be repaired is still crapping up... I'm at wits end to know what to do with it. at this point it would work better as a boat anchor..... I dont know what to do with it... I've sent their crash reports in. run their diagnostics programs they wanted me to. the computer still gets hot despite being on a cooler (fan thing under the computer plugs into the USB port) it blue screens every time I try to watch a video, I can see maybe a minute of it before it locks up, then it blue screens...... I dont know what to do......

I know of 3 friends DV series computers that do the same thing. the exact same thing. the GPU basically melts down.... *sigh*.... what a pain

I was a long time Gateway fan. I'm still using a Gateway HDMI monitor on my current office Dell.
Gateway's lasted me well. I only got rid of them as better systems got cheaper.

All my office computers are Dell, including our server. Happy with all of them.

I also love my Ipads!!

That's a royal PITA! Under warranty is all well and good, but when you have to repeatedly ship it back and forth (I don't care if it doesn't cost a cent) it sucks. Hopefully you can get it squared away this time.

Like Hatty, I end up buying a new one every few years for home so I don't have to deal with the (more frequent) headaches. OTOH our work PC's are spec built by our IT contractor so on the extremely rare occasion that there is an issue, they come here and it's their headache.

Buy a new one. I wish I could lease PC's I junk mine and upgrade every 3-4 years so I don't have to deal with crap.

My current HP is two years old this fall, next winter I'll be starting to look for a replacement.

I cant afford to buy a new one. when I buy them I buy the top of the line so they'll be decent for 3-5 years and will support current and future programs... I cant afford to replace it :/

Have you considered insisting on it being replaced?

Apple has an unwritten policy of replacing a machine on it's fourth trip in for service. I had a bum MacBook a few years ago. Sent it back three times for various issues. The fourth time it went down, I called AppleCare, explained the issue and asked the CS rep to please look up my warranty history. She did, and two days later I had a new - upgraded as the other model was no longer available- laptop.
I don't know what HP, Dell etc. do in cases like these, but it might be worth a shot.

In that case I think I'd be raising hell for a refund.

I dont know what is going to happen.... I'm just overly tired of the whole thing... their solutions have made things if anything, worse. each trip to the repair center takes a week, so it's a week without a decent computer, a week without the video and website programs I need a week without the source files.... I've lost 2 clients now because of this. I dont blame them one bit either... this whole situation is nuts. I have 2 friends who has the DV series computer and both of theirs have crapped out on them a multitude of times. one of them is currently being worked on. and it was suggested that I send this one back yet again for 'Diagnostics and testing for an extended period of time' the computer gets hot. so hot that you can barely touch it, the HDD bays are warm but not hot, the memory is the same way. the CPU GPU FSB area is just absolutely scorching.... it's melted the surface of a laptop cooler I had under it. I'm about to go get another one because this one has about had it..... I'm sorry to rant but it's just frackin frustrating.......

Partition the hard drive. Put Windows on 2 partitions with data on a 3rd. Find a partition cloning program. There are several decent free ones out there.

Make a Linux live CD. Boot into Linux and manually delete the windows system files. Find a Linux virus program that scans Windows disks. Reinstall windows on a partition. Get Kapersky TDSSKiller, Combofix, MBam & Avira. Run in the order given.

When OS is clean, clone your system partition so you have at least 3 operating systems. Install Linux on 1 or 2 more partitions.

Bleepingcomputer and majorgeeks both have good virus help forums but they have more requests than helpers.

If you switch to Linux, you may need to use an older version than current. Just download and create the live disk until you find one that works on your hardware. I'm at Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop & 12.something on my laptop.

Your data is backed up? Mine wasn't (years ago) and the computer store asked how importand I thought the data was - apparently not very. I hope this helps. It was learned after much repeated virus problems that the local computer store didn't/couldn't fix.

my data is backed up and nothing wrong with my drive either. It's been restored several times to HP default this past couple weeks to try and fix the issue. they are still insistant that its a HDD error. I disagree. and I dont like linux well enough to switch or do very much with it.... this computer is better off use as a target at the moment
